GCAmTour-Houston, The Oakhurst Open Tournament Recap, June 22, 2013


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston.  The Cormier’s clean up at Oakhurst Golf Club, the first wife and husband to win their respective flights at the same event.  Congratulations to the Cormier’s! 

 

The Course:  Oakhurst Golf Club, Porter, Texas.  The course was in good condition with green tees, fairways, and putting surfaces.  The greens were slower and grainy, running 8.5-9. 

 

The Weather:  A great day for golf with a mix of sunshine, blue sky, and clouds.   Temperatures were in the mid 70’s early and warmed up rapidly to the mid 90’s.  The winds were light and steady from the South 5-8mph.

 

The Tournament: 

 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  Lynn Cormier (72), Neill Osborne (75), Rich Vigil (82/43), Jaleel Adatia (82/45), Milton Kirkwood (84). 
     

Lynn Cormier, winner of the Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay, captured his third victory of the season.   Cormier carded a round of 75 that included fourteen pars, a birdie at the par-3 11th, and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 14th.  Neill Osborne finished with runner up honors and round of 75, three strokes back.  Osborne carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12.  Rich Vigil finished with third place honors and round of 82/43.  Vigil, winner of the 50/50, also won closest on the par-3 5th with a birdie-2.  Vigil also carded seven pars.  Jaleel Adatia made his tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 82/45.  Adatia carded six pars and birdies at holes 1 and 3 for a 1-over par 37 front nine.  Milton Kirkwood finished with fifth place honors and round of 84.  Kirkwood carded nine pars on the day.

 

 

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  John Hunt (77), Lim Lam (78/39/24), David Barham (78/39/27), Frank Wallace (80), Drue Thompson (81/40).

John Hunt captured his second victory of the 2013 season with a narrow one-stroke round of 77.  Hunt has fired 77 in four different tournaments this season, one win away from qualifying for Nationals.  Hunt carded ten pars and birdies at holes 15 and 17.  Jim Lam finished with runner up honors and round of 78/39/24.  Lam carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-3 17th hole.  David Barham finished with third place honors and round of 78/39/27.  Barham carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-3 5th hole.  Frank Wallace finished with fourth place honors and round of 80.  Wallace carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 15th hole.  Drue Thompson finished with fifth place honors and round of 81/40.  Thompson carded ten pars on the round.

 

 

Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Jan Peebles (73), Collier Nolte (76), Allan Collier (78), Randy Kiziah (79/40/25), Dennis Walsh (79/40/27).

Jan Peebles captured his fourth victory of the season and moved closer to that much desired Championship flight promotion.  Peebles round of 1-over 73 was three strokes clear of field and included thirteen pars and birdies at holes 1 and 11.   Collier Nolte finished with runner up honors and round of 76.  Nolte carded nine pars and birdies at holes 1, 3, and 14.  Allan “Hot Pants” Collier finished with third place honors and round of 78.  Collier, playing well this season, carded twelve pars including a 1-over par front nine 37.  Randy Kiziah finished with fourth place honors and round of 79/40/25.  Kiziah carded twelve pars on the round.  Dennis Walsh finished with fifth place honors and round of 79/40/27.  Walsh carded twelve pars on his round.

 

 

Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Leslie Henry (74), Jeff Stahlhut (80/39), Collin Burwinkel (80/42), Roger Masek (82), Mike Rayburn (83).

Leslie Henry seems to be gaining momentum in the Hogan Flight with her fourth win of the season.  Henry went back-to-back by winning Oakhurst after winning the Bayou Classic at Atchafalaya Golf Course at Idlewild.  Henry’s round of 74 was six strokes clear of the field and included twelve pars and birdies at holes 6 and 14.  Jeff Stahlhut continues to play well and finished with runner up honors and round of 80/39.  Stahlhut carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole.  Collin Burwinkel made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 80/42.  Burwinkel carded seven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 9.  Roger Masek returned to good form and finished with fourth place honors and round of 82.  Masek carded seven pars and birdies at holes 6 and 8.  Mike Rayburn finished with fifth place honors and round of 83.  Rayburn carded seven pars and birdies at both par-5’s on the back nine, holes 10 and 14.

 

 

Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Bruce Beakley (79), Christopher Phillips (81), Ron Redkey (82), Bill Schuster (83), Kevin Thibodeaux (84).

Bruce Beakley captured his fourth victory of the season with a two-stroke clear round of 79.  Beakley carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 3rd hole.  Christopher Phillips finished with runner up honors and round of 81.  Phillips carded thirteen pars on the round but found trouble at 8 and 9.  Ron Redkey finished with third place honors and round of 82.  Redkey carded ten pars on the day.  Bill Schuster finished with fourth place honors and round of 83.  Schuster carded nine pars on his round.  Kevin Thibodeaux finished with fifth place honors and round of 84.  Thibodeaux carded nine pars on his round. 

 

 

Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  James Sheppeard (81), Hunter Hudgens (83), Bryan Young (84), Robert Murphy (85), Kristopher Bixby (87).

James Sheppeard captured his first victory of the season with a two-stroke clear round of 81.  Sheppeard was steady on the round, carding seven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 7.  Hunter Hudgens finished with runner up honors and round of 83.  Hudgens carded eleven pars on the round including a 1-over par 37 front nine.  Bryan Young finished with third place honors and round of 84.  Young carded eight pars on the round but found trouble on the par-4 18th hole.  Robert Murphy finished with fourth place honors and round of 85.  Murphy carded seven pars on his round.  Kristopher Bixby finished with fifth place honors and round of 87.  Bixby carded six pars on the round.
 
 

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Keith Gannon (78), Marty Hodges (82), Chris Neelley (86), Tom Dyer (87/40), Walter White (87/45).

Keith Gannon captured his first victory of the season with an impressive round of 78, four strokes clear of the field.  Gannon was solid on the round carding thirteen pars and just five holes higher than par.  Marty Hodges finished with runner up honors and round of 82.  Hodges carded five pars and birdies at holes 2, 7, and 17.  Chris Neelley finished with third place honors and round of 86.  Neelley carded four pars and birdies at holes 1, 11, 12, and 14.  Tom Dyer finished with fourth place honors and round of 87/40.  Dyer carded eight pars on the day.  Walter White finished with fifth place honors and round of 87.  White carded eight pars on his round.

 

 

Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Patrick Richardson (89), Brandon Bodenhamer (92/44), Jeff Workman (92/49), Artis Stewart (97/51), Kyle Young (97/53).

It’s been a long time coming but Patrick Richardson has made the transition from Snead and captured his first Jones Flight victory of the 2013 season.  Congratulations!  Richardson carded a round of 89 for the victory, three strokes clear of the field, keeping the big numbers off the card and four pars.  Brandon Bodenhamer finished with runner up honors and round of 92/44.  Bodenhamer carded four pars on the day.  Jeff Workman finished with third place honors and round of 92/49, including six pars and a birdie at par-3 7th hole.  Artis Stewart finished with fourth place honors and round of 97/51.  Stewart carded five pars on his round.  Kyle Young finished with fifth place honors and round of 97/53.  Young carded two pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 2nd hole. 

 

Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Lu Cormier (86), Michael Bell (87), John Scott (90), Neil MacDonald (91), David Laird Smith (92/43).

Lu Cormier has been working hard on her game and finally broke through for her first win of the 2013 season.  Cormier’s round of 86 was just one stroke clear of the field in the tightly contested Senior Jones Flight.  Cormier carded five pars and birdies at holes 15 and 17, including a 2-over par 38 back nine!  Michael Bell returned to tour action and finished with runner up honors and round of 87.  Bell carded six pars and birdies at holes 5 and 11, including a four-over par front nine.  John Scott finished with third place honors and round of 90.  Scott carded three pars and a birdie at the par-5 14th hole.  Neil MacDonald finished with fourth place honors and round of 91.  MacDonald carded five pars on the day.  David Laird Smith finished with fifth place honors and round of 92/43.  Smith carded four pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole.

 

 

Snead Flight:  Robert Viator (91), Elgin Amboree (97), Stephen Sater (100), Javier Quintero (101), Bryce Kocian (102).

Robert Viator captured his sixth victory of the 2013 season with an impressive six-stroke clear round of 91.  What amazing about all of Viator’s wins this season?  He has yet to card a round below 90 all season long.  Viator did card four pars on the day.  Elgin Amboree made the best of his late entry and finished with runner up honors and round of 97.  Amboree carded three pars on the round.  Stephen Sater finished with third place honors and round of 100, nursing a bad wheel.  Sater carded three pars on his round.  Javier Quintero finished with fourth place honors and round of 101.  Quintero managed 1 par and eight bogeys on his round.  Bryce Kocian finished with fifth place honors and round of 102, including eight bogeys and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole.

GCAmTour-Houston, The Wilderness Tournament Results, June 1, 2013


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston.  Traylor Sells makes his first career Hole-In-One to win the Senior Palmer Flight by one-stroke over the field at The Wilderness Golf Club.  Players took advantage of good course and weather conditions and score low at the Wilderness.

 

The Course:  The Wilderness Golf Club, Lake Jackson, Texas.  The course was in great condition with green tees, fairways, and putting surfaces.  The greens were good, running smooth and a fast, 10. 

 

The Weather:  A great day for golf with a mix of sunshine, blue sky, and clouds.   Temperatures were in the mid 70’s early and warmed up rapidly to the low 90’s.  The winds were stronger and steady from the South 10-15mph.

 

The Tournament: 

 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  Rich Vigil (76), Randy Tadlock (78), Bernard Weber (80/40), Gordon Wagner (80/41), Milton Kirkwood (81).    
  

Rich Vigil captured his first victory of the 2013 season two strokes clear of the field and round of 76.  Vigil carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-4 3rd hole, including an even par 36 on the back nine.  Randy Tadlock finished with runner up honors and round of 78.  Tadlock carded ten pars and birdie at the par-3 8th hole, including a 1-over par 37 on the front nine.  Bernard Weber finished with third place honors and round of 80/40.  Weber carded six pars and birdies at holes 7 and 14.  Gordon Wagner finished with fourth place honors and round of 80/41.  Wagner carded twelve pars and birdie at the par-3 16th hole.  Milton Kirkwood finished with fifth place honors and round of 81.  Kirkwood carded nine pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 18th hole.

 

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Travis Nichols (71), Martin Nealey (74), Jon Bellamy (75), Steve Allison (78/37), Evan Winograd (78/40).

Travis Nichols captured his third victory of the 2013 in dramatic fashion with a tournament low round of 1-under par 71.  Nichols was on fire, carding thirteen pars and birdies at holes 2, 10, and 17, including a 2-under par back nine.  Martin Nealey, 2010 Hogan Flight Champion, finished with runner up honors and round of 74.  Nealey carded twelve pars and birdies at holes 1, 2, and 14, including and even par run over his last thirteen holes.  Jon Bellamy finished with third place honors and round of 75.  Bellamy carded fourteen pars and birdies at holes 7 and 16, but found trouble at the par-4 9th.  Steve Allison finished with fourth place honors and round of 78/37.  Allison carded nine pars and birdies at holes 14 and 17 and including a 1-over par back nine.  Evan Winograd finished with fifth place honors and round of 78/40.  Winograd carded ten pars and birdies at holes 2, 11, and 14. 

 

Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Traylor Sells (73), Dennis Walsh (74), Robert Corbello (76), Dusty Rhodes (78/39), Allan Collier (78/41).

Traylor Sells captured his first victory of the 2013 season in dramatic fashion with a one-stroke victory over the field and round of 1-over par 73.  Sells carded eleven pars, birdies at holes 4 and 17, and a HOLE-IN-ONE at the par-3 8th hole.  Sells 6-iron approach landing about 10 feet short and rolled into the hole for his first career ACE!  Dennis Walsh finished with runner up honors and round of 2-over par 74.  Walsh carded ten pars and birdies at holes 3, 4, 8, and 12, including and even par front nine.  Robert Corbello, 2008 Palmer Flight Champion, finished with third place honors and round of 76.  Corbello carded nine pars and birdies at holes 2, 11, and 13, including an even-par back nine 36.  Dusty Rhodes finished with fourth place honors and round of 78/39.  Rhodes carded nine pars and birdies at holes 8 and 17.  Allan Collier finished with fifth place honors and round of 78/41.  Collier carded nine pars and birdies at holes 3 and 14, including a 1-over par front nine.

 

Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Jeff Stahlhut (78), Matt Purgahn (83), Scott Nagai (84), Andrew Lai (85), Roger Masek (87).

Jeff Stahlhut continues to play well captured his fourth victory of the 2013 season, backing up his win at our last event at Rayburn Country.  Stahlhut carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-3 4th hole.  Matt Purgahn finished with runner up honors and round of 83.  Purgahn carded five pars and birdies at holes 14 and 17.  Scott Nagai finished with third place honors and round of 84.  Nagai carded six pars and a birdie at the par-4 11th hole.  Andrew Lai finished with fourth place honors and round of 85.  Lai carded eight pars on the round.  Roger Masek finished with fifth place honors and round of 87.  Masek carded six pars and birdies at holes 10 and 13, including a 2-over par back nine.

 

Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Rickey Felts (75), Daryl Epperson (77/39), Will Whitley (77/41), Bill Schuster (79), Eddey Neeley (80/39).

Rickey Felts captured his first victory of the 2013 season and successfully defended his victory at the Wilderness in 2010.  Felts round of 75 was two strokes clear of the field and included seven pars and birdies at holes 2, 5, 6, 11, and 12, including an even-par 36 on the back nine.  Daryl Epperson finished with runner up honors and round of 77/39.  Epperson carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 3 and 4.  Will Whitley finished with third place honors and round of 77/41.  Whitley carded seven pars, birdies at holes 7 and 11, and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 2nd hole.  Bill Schuster finished with fourth place honors and round of 79.  Schuster carded six pars and birdies at holes 7, 9, and 10.  Eddey Neeley finished with fifth place honors and round of 80/39.  Neeley carded ten pars and back-to-back birdies at holes 11 and 12.

 

Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Stacy Smith (73), Bryan Young (78), Kevin Montague (81), Massimo Passini (82), Robert Murphy (83/41/27/14).

Stacy Smith captured his fourth victory of the season with a career low round of 73, defending his victory at the Wilderness from 2012.  Smith may have punched that stamp for a Hogan Flight promotion with the low round.  Smith carded twelve pars and birdies at holes 2, 13, and 14, including a 1-under par front nine.  Bryan Young finished with runner up honors and round of 78.  Young carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 4 and 11, including a 2-over back nine 38.  Kevin Montague finished with third place honors and round of 81.  Montague carded eight pars and birdies at holes 3, 14, and 16.  Massimo Passini finished with fourth place honors and round of 82.  Passini carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th hole, including a 2-over par 38 back nine.  Robert Murphy finished with fifth place honors and round of 83/41/27/14.  Murphy carded ten pars on the round.

 

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Larry Viktorin (77), Chris Neelley (80/39), Roman Umali (80/40), Marty Hodges (82), Olan Benge (84/44).

Larry Viktorin captured his second victory of the 2013 season, three strokes clear of the field and round of 77.  Viktorin carded eleven pars and a “hat trick” of birdies at 12, 13, and 14, including a 2-over par front nine 38.  Chris Neelley finished with runner up honors and round of 80/39.  Neelley carded seven pars and birdies at holes 8, 11, and the difficult par-4 18th.  Roman Umali finished with third place honors and round of 80/40.  Umali carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-3 16th hole.  Marty Hodges, Wilderness Champion in 2011, finished with fourth place honors and round of 82.  Hodges carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole.  Olan Benge, Senior Jones Flight Champion in 2009, finished with fifth place honors and round of 84/44.  Benge carded six pars and a birdie at the par-4 6th hole. 

 

 

Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Rick Halprin (84), Mike Murphy (85/44), Mark Boles (85/45), Kyle Young (86/39), Thomas Dubrock (86/43/27).

Rick Halprin, Horseshoe Bay Major Champion, captured his third victory of the 2013 season, one-stroke clear of the field and round of 84.  Halprin carded eight pars and birdies at holes 7 and 13.  Mike Murphy finished with runner up honors and round of 85/44.  Murphy carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 3rd hole.  Mark Boles finished with third place honors and round of 85/45.  Boles carded nine pars on the round.  Kyle Young finished with fourth place honors and round of 86/39.  Young carded five pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th hole.  Thomas Dubrock finished with fifth place honors and round of 86/43/27.  Dubrock carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole.

 

 

Snead Flight:  Ramon Colen (98), Jeremy Fang (99/49), Javier Quintero (99/52), Bryce Kocian (101), Johnnie Mack McFarland (116).

Ramon Colen made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile by capturing his first victory of the 2013 season.  Colen’s one-stroke victory and round of 98 included five pars and a birdie at the par-4 12th hole.  Jeremy Fang finished with runner up honors and round of 99/49.  Fang carded three pars and a birdie at the par-3 16th hole.  Javier Quintero finished with third place honors and round of 99/52.  Quintero carded six pars on the day.  Bryce Kocian finished with fourth place honors and round of 101.  Kocian carded eleven bogeys on the round.  Johnnie Mack McFarland finished with fifth place honors and round of 116.  McFarland carded five pars on the round.
