Playoffs determine winners for multiple flights at GCAmTour-Houston tournament hosted by Gleannloch Pines Golf Club. Tournament players navigated strong winds to record competitive scores that resulted in playoffs in several flights.
The Course: Gleannloch Pines Golf Club, Spring, TX. The course was in good fall condition with semi-dormant fairways and rough. The greens were good, medium-fast, running around 10.
The Weather: A beautiful December day for golf with sunshine, mixed clouds, and temperatures in the low-80’s. The winds were challenging for players most of the day and blew strong from the South 15-20mph.
The Tournament:
Championship Flight: Top 5: Scott Waltrip (72), Craig Wakefield (75), Lynn Cormier (76), Travis Nichols (77), Randy Tadlock (78/36).
Scott Waltrip made his tour debut and captured his first tournament victory three strokes clear with a tournament low round of 72. Waltrip carded ten pars and birdies at holes 4, 6, 10, and 16. Craig Wakefield finished runner up with a round of 75, carding eleven pars and birdies at holes 16 and 18. Lynn Cormier finished with third place honors and round of 76. Cormier carded ten pars and birdies at holes 15 and 16. Travis Nichols finished with fourth place honors and round of 77, including ten pars and a birdie at the 10th hole. Randy Tadlock finished fifth place with a round of 78/36, carding five pars and birdies at holes 4, 13, and 18.
Palmer Flight: Top 5: Frank Wallace (75), Stephen Asp II (74), Tino Flores (75), John Hunt (77), Martin Nealey (79), Jason Hollis (80).
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Palmer Flight at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club in GCAmTour-Houston event. Frank Wallace and Stephen Asp II went to the 28th hole and it was Wallace carding par for the victory. Wallace is off to a fast start this season with “back-to-back” victories and successfully defending his title at Gleannloch Pines. In regulation play, Wallace carded eleven pars, a birdie at the 7th hole, and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 16th hole. Asp II carded twelve pars and birdies at holes 3 and 4 in regulation play. Tino Flores finished with third place honors and round of 75, including nine pars and birdies at holes 7 and 16. John Hunt finished with fourth place honors and round of 77, two strokes back. Hunt carded eight pars and birdies at holes 1 and 7. Martin Nealey finished with fifth place honors and round of 79. Nealey carded eleven pars and a birdie at the 6th hole. Jason Hollis finished sixth place with a round of 80, including 7 pars, a birdie at the 18th hole, and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 16th hole.
Senior Palmer Flight: Top 5: Mike Hafner (77), Jan Peebles (77), Art Flores (81/39/27/13), Robert Corbello (81/39/27/15), Walter Menuet (82).
Mike Hafner his tour debut and captured his first tournament victory in a scorecard playoff over Jan Peebles, both firing rounds of 77. Waltrip carded a round of 77/34 that included nine pars, a birdie at 16th hole, and an EAGLE-2 at the par-4 11th hole. Jan Peebles finished runner up with a round of 77/37, including nine pars and birdies at holes 13 and 16. Art Flores finished with third place honors and round of 81/39/27/13, including seven pars and birdies at holes 7 and 16. Robert Corbello finished fourth place with a round of 81/39/27/15, carding ten pars. Walter Menuet finished with fifth place honors and round of 82, carding eleven pars.
Hogan Flight: Top 5: Andrew Lai (77), Gus Aldana (79/37), Rick Keszeg (79/40), Shane Poston (81/38), Ross Gonzales (81/40).
Andrew Lai captured his first tour victory two strokes clear of the field with an impressive round of 77. Lai carded ten pars and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 16th hole. Gus Aldana finished with runner up honors and round of 79/37, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 5 and 13. Rick Keszeg finished with third place honors and round of 79/40, including nine pars and a birdie at the 7th hole. Shane Poston finished with fourth place honors and round of 81/38. Poston carded eight pars and a birdie at the 18th hole. Ross Gonzales finished with fifth place honors and round of 81/40. Gonzales carded seven pars and a birdie at the 5th hole.
Senior Hogan Flight: Top 5: George Smith (80), Bill Mathews (83/38), Christopher Phillips (83/39), Michael Castaneda (84), Bruce Beakley (85).
George Smith captured his first victory of the season three strokes clear of the field with a round of 80. Smith carded eight pars and birdies at holes 4 and 6. Bill Mathews finished with runner up honors and round of 83/38, carding seven pars and a birdie at the 17th hole. Christopher Phillips captured third place honors and round of 83/39. Phillips carded eight pars on the day. Michael Castaneda finished with fourth place honors and round of 84, including nine pars and a birdie at the 13th hole. Bruce Beakley finished with fifth place honors and round of 85. Beakley carded seven pars and a birdie at the 7th hole.
Sarazen Flight: Top 5: Kevin Le (80), Michael Esquivel (82), Dung Huynh (85), Jeff Greenwood (87), Phillip Sumang (88).
Kevin Le captured his first tour victory two strokes clear of the field with an impressive round of 80. Le was steady and carded eleven pars on the day. Michael Esquivel made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and captured runner up honors and round of 82. Esquivel carded nine pars and a birdie at the 13th hole. Dung Huynh finished with third place honors and round of 85, carding seven pars on the day. Jeff Greenwood finished with fourth place honors and round of 87. Greenwood carded nine pars on the round. Phillip Sumang finished with fifth place honors and round of 88. Sumang carded eight pars on the day.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Top 5: James Wofford (79/36), Mark Kirby (79/39), Roman Umali (81), Lee Brunell (82), Mark Maddox (85).
James Wofford captured his first victory of the season by winning a scorecard playoff over Mark Kirby with both golfers carding rounds of 79. Wofford’s round of 79/36 included six pars and birdies at holes 7, 17, and 18. Kirby carded a round of 79/39 that included six pars and birdies at holes 4, 9, and 18. Roman Umali finished with third place honors and round of 81. Umali carded eight pars on the day. Lee Brunell finished with fourth place honors and round of 82. Brunell carded eight pars and a birdie at the 10th hole. Mark Maddox finished with fifth place honors and round of 85. Maddox carded six pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.
Jones Flight: Top 5: Kristopher Bixby (85), Bryan Young (86), Conrad Doss (88), Randy Pegg (89), Brock Mayberry (93).
Kristopher Bixby captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the field and round of 85. Bixby carded six pars and birdies at holes 11 and 16. Bryan Young finished with runner up honors and round of 86. Young carded seven pars on his round. Conrad Doss finished with third place honors and round of 88, including six pars and a birdie at the 16th hole. Randy Pegg finished with fourth place honors and round of 89. Pegg carded three pars and birdies at holes 4 and 16. Brock Mayberry finished with fifth place honors and round of 93. Mayberry carded six pars on the round.
Senior Jones Flight: Top 5: Mike Innes (85/42/27), John Scott (85/42/28), Eddie Knight (87), Neil MacDonald (89/42), George Ramirez (89/45).
Mike Innes captured his first victory of the season by winning a scorecard playoff over John Scott with both golfers carded rounds of 85. Innes’s round of 85/42/27 included six pars and a birdie at the 5th hole. Scott finished runner up with a round of 85/42/28 that included eight pars. Eddie Knight finished with third place honors and round of 87. Knight carded six pars and a birdie at the 11th hole. Neil MacDonald finished with fourth place honors and round of 89/42. MacDonald carded five pars on the round. George Ramirez finished with fifth place honors and round of 89/45. Ramirez carded nine pars on the day.
Snead Flight: Damian Smith (84), Alan Brumley (85), Marcy Glidden (88), Jim Lamberth (89/42), Elgin Amboree (89/44).
Damian Smith captured his first victory of the season with a great round of 84 but just one stroke over the field. Smith’s round included eight pars and a birdie at the 13th hole. Alan Brumley finished with runner up honors and round of 85. Brumley likes his new PING irons and they produced five pars and a birdie at the 4th hole. Marcy Glidden finished with third place honors and round of 88. Glidden carded five pars and a birdie at the 17th hole. Jim Lamberth finished with fourth place honors and round of 89/42. Lamberth carded five pars on the round. Elgin Amboree finished with fifth place honors and round of 89/44, including four pars.
