Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston players take to the course for The Woodlands Player Signature event, The Woodlands, Texas. The course lived up to its difficult nature and proved to be a challenge for many players, with scoring higher than average.
The Course: The Woodlands Player Course, The Woodlands, Texas. The course was in good condition with green tees and fairways. The greens were good, running smooth to slightly bumpy and speed medium fast, around 9-10.
The Weather: Another blessed and amazing day for golf with a mix of sunshine, blue sky, and clouds. Temperatures were in the mid 60’s early and warmed up rapidly to near 80 degrees. The winds were light in the morning but increased throughout the day from the ESE 10-15mph.
The Tournament:
Championship Flight: Top 5: Craig Wakefield (79), Lynn Cormier (82), Babak Mobasheri (84), Milton Kirkwood (87).
Craig Wakefield successfully defended his victory at The Woodlands Player event from 2012 with another victory in 2013. Wakefield’s first victory of the 2013 season was three strokes clear of the field and round of 79. Wakefield carded nine pars and birdies at holes 5 and 16. Lynn Cormier finished with runner up honors and round of 82. Cormier carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole. Babak Mobasheri finished with third place honors and round of 84. Mobasheri carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 16th hole. Milton Kirkwood finished with fourth place honors and round of 87. Kirkwood carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-3 5th hole.
Palmer Flight: Top 5: Travis Nichols (75), Frank Wallace (79/38), Tino Flores (79/39), Martin Nealey (83), Dave Davlin (84).
Travis Nichols captured his second victory of the 2013, this time four strokes clear of the field with a tournament low round of 75. Nichols carded nine pars and birdies at holes 4, 11, 13, and 16 en route to victory. Frank Wallace finished with runner-up honors and round of 79/38. Wallace carded six pars and birdies at holes 4, 12, and 16. Tino Flores just missed runner-up honors with a round of 79/39. Flores third place finish included twelve pars. Martin Nealey finished with fourth place honors and round of 83. Nealey carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 7th hole. Dave Davlin made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with fifth place honors. Davlin carded a round of 84 that included eight pars and back-to-back birdies at holes 6 and 7.
Senior Palmer Flight: Top 5: Tom Crea (76), Dennis Walsh (80/40), Herb Reynolds (80/42), Allan Collier (81), Joe Sublett (83).
Tom Crea captured his second win of the 2013 season four strokes clear of the field and round of 76. Crea carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 2 and 8 en route to victory. Dennis Walsh returned to good form finishing with runner-up honors and round of 80/40. Walsh carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-3 14th hole. Herb Reynolds finished with third place honors and round of 80/42. Reynolds carded seven pars and birdies at holes 6, 16, and 18. Allan Collier continues to play well this season and finished with fourth place honors and round of 81. Collier carded seven pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 18th hole. Joe Sublett finished with fifth place honors and round of 83. Sublett carded nine pars and birdies at holes 2 and 16.
Hogan Flight: Top 5: Rick Keszeg (79), Leslie Henry (86), Michael Campbell (89), Vincent Sloan (90/45), Roger Masek (90/46).
Rick Keszeg captured his first win of the 2013 season seven strokes clear of the field and round of 79. Keszeg was consistent, carding eight pars and birdies at holes 2 and 17 en route to victory. Leslie Henry followed up her victory at Copper Mill with her third runner-up finish of the season. Henry carded a round of 86 that included eight pars. Michael Campbell made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile, finishing with third place honors and round of 89. Campbell carded seven pars on the round. Vincent Sloan finished with fourth place honors and round of 90/45. Sloan carded eight pars but couldn’t keep the big numbers off the card. Roger Masek finished with fifth place honors and round of 90/46. Masek carded six pars and birdies at holes 5 and 16.
Senior Hogan Flight: Top 5: Randy Hodges (78), John Olsen (81/40), Will Whitley (81/41), Bruce Beakley (82), Christopher Phillips (84/43).
Randy Hodges captured his first victory of the 2013 season three strokes clear of the field and round of 78. Hodges was solid on the round, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 4 and 6. John Olsen finished with runner up honors and round of 81/40. Olsen carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 13th hole. Will Whitley finished with third place honors and round of 81/41. Whitley carded twelve pars on the round but found trouble at 1 and 11. Bruce Beakley finished with fourth place honors and round of 82. Beakley carded ten pars on the day but struggled at holes 9 and 10. Christopher Phillips finished with fifth place honors and round of 84/43. Phillips carded nine pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 9th hole.
Sarazen Flight: Top 5: Stacy Smith (82), Gary Gum (84), James Sheppeard (85), Rick Smalley (89), Joe Luman (94).
Stacy Smith captured his third victory of the 2013, qualifying for Nationals in the process, with a round of 82. Smith two-stroke victory included nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 10th hole. Gary Gum finished with runner up honors and round of 84. Gum carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 17th hole. James Sheppeard finished with third place honors and round of 85. Sheppeard carded five pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12. Rick Smalley finished with fourth place honors and round of 89. Smalley carded four pars and birdies at holes 2, 10, and 16. Joe Luman finished with fifth place honors and round of 94. Luman carded seven pars on the day.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Top 5: Robert Gonzales (85), James Wofford (85), Scott Sammons (89), Randall Petty (90), Lahn Nguyen (92/44).
“Sudden Death Playoff” determines the winner of the Senior Sarazen Flight event at The Woodlands Player Course. Robert Gonzales and James Wofford both carded rounds of 85 in regulation play. After tying scores on the first playoff hole, it was Gonzales making bogey for the win. In regulation play Gonzales carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 7th hole. Wofford carded seven pars in regulation play. Scott Sammons finished with third place honors and round of 89. Sammons carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 1st hole. Randall Petty finished with fourth place honors and round of 90. Petty had six pars and birdies at holes 3 and 16. Lahn Nguyen finished with fifth honors and round of 92/44, including four pars and birdies at holes 12 and 16.
Jones Flight: Top 5: Bryan Young (84) Alan Brumley (90/44), Mark Boles (90/45), Kristopher Bixby (91), Michael Bell (93).
Bryan Young captured his second victory of the 2013 season with a winning score of 84. Young was six strokes clear of the field and making a bid at a Sarazen Flight promotion. Young carded nine pars on his round. Alan Brumley finished with runner up honors and round of 90/44. Brumley managed eight pars on his round but couldn’t keep the big numbers off the card. Mark Boles followed his win at River Ridge with a third place finished at The Woodlands Player. Boles round of 90 included four pars. Kristopher Bixby finished with fourth place honors and round of 91, including six pars. Michael Bell finished with fifth place honors and round of 93. Bell carded three pars on the day.
Snead Flight: Robert Viator (96), Marcy Glidden (98), Doyle Fleming (101/52/31), Danny Nunez (101/52/34), Timothy Thayer (102).
Robert Viator captured his fourth victory of the 2013 season at The Woodlands Player Course; two strokes clear of the field and round of 96. The Texas Open Champion carded six pars on the day. Marcy Glidden, the Myrtle Beach Classic Champion, finished with runner up honors and round of 98. Glidden carded three pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th hole. Doyle Fleming made the trip down from the DFW Tour worthwhile and finished with third place honors and round of 101/52/31, including four pars. Danny Nunez captured fourth place honors and round of 101/52/34. Nunez carded two pars on the day. Timothy Thayer finished with fifth place honors and round of 102. Thayer managed four pars on the round.
