GCAmTour-Houston, River Ridge Tournament Results, March 29, 2014


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – Art Flores records first “ACE” of the season on GCAmTour-Houston.  “Sudden Death” playoffs determine outcome in multiple flights as play was tightly contested at River Ridge Golf Club, Sealy, TX. 


The Course:  River Ridge Golf Club, Sealy, Texas.  The course was in great condition, still green and plush with winter rye.  The course did receive about ½” of rain the day before the event so it played a bit softer.  The greens were in good condition, smooth and medium-fast, running 9.5-10.     

The Weather:  One of the best days of golf weather we have seen all year.  Clear blue sky in the morning, a brief period of overcast/haze, and later clear, blue sky again.  The temperatures were cooler in the morning mid/lower 50’s and warmed up to the mid/high 70’s.  The winds were steady from the N 10-15mph throughout the day, allowing competitive scoring.  

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Corey Freeland (76), Jeff Whitzel (77), Scott Anderson (80), Cooper Abercrombie (86).

Corey Freeland captured his tour victory in the tightly contested Championship by recording a matching tournament low round of 76.  Freeland carded ten pars and birdies at holes 1 and 17.  Freeland was steady on the round, going out in 37 and in with 39.  Jeff Whitzel, past Champion (12’ & 13’) finished with runner up honors and round of 77.  Whitzel carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th hole.  Whitzel went out in 36 and with 41, making two costly doubles on the back.  Scott Anderson finished with third place honors and round of 80.  Anderson carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th hole as well.  Anderson went out in 38 and in with a 42, struggling a bit over the last five holes.  Cooper Abercrombie finished with fourth place honors and round of 86.  Abercrombie carded eight pars and birdies at holes 13 & 14.  Abercrombie went out in 48 and in with 38, finding some trouble on the front nine. 


Palmer Flight:  Kevin Duke (77), Frank Wallace (78), Cedric Smith (80/39), Wayne Taylor (80/43), Michael Van Swol (81).

Kevin Duke, 2011 Champion, captured his first victory of the 2014 season with a one-stroke victory over the field and round of 77.  Duke carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-4 11th hole.  Duke went out in 38 and with 39, steady on the round.  Frank Wallace finished with runner up honors and round of 78.  Wallace carded eight pars and birdies at 10 and 17.  Wallace went out in 41 and with a one-over par 37.  Cedric Smith finished with third place honors and round of 80/39.  Smith carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole, out in 41 and with 39.  Wayne Taylor finished with fourth place honors and round of 80/43.  Taylor carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-5 3rd hole, out in 2-over 37 and in with 43.  Michael Van Swol made his tour debut with the fifth place finish and round of 81.  Van Swol carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th, going out in 41 and in with 40.



Senior Palmer Flight:  Joe Sublett (77/39/26), Dusty Rhodes (77/39/27), Dennis Walsh (82/39), David Anthony (82/40), Allan Collier (84/42).
 “Scorecard Playoff” determines the winner in the tightly contested Senior Palmer Flight on GCAmTour-Houston tour stop at River Ridge.  Joe Sublett and Dusty Rhodes both carded rounds of 77 in regulation play.  Both golfers carded back nine totals of 39.  On the second tiebreaker it was Sublett carding 26 over the last six holes vs. 27 for Rhodes.  In regulation play, Sublett carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-3 12th hole, out in 38 and with 39.  Rhodes carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole, out in 38 and in with 39.  Dennis Walsh finished with third place honors and round of 82/39.  Walsh carded ten pars on the round, out in 43 and with 39.  David Anthony finished with fourth place honors and round of 82/40.  Anthony carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole.  Anthony struggled on the first two holes and went out in 42 and with a 40.  Allan Collier finished with fifth place honors and round of 84/42.  Collier carded six pars, going out in 42 and with 42.  Art Flores also shot a round of 82 but carded a 43 on the back nine.  Although he didn’t win, Flores had the shot of the day at the par-3 4th hole.  Flores stepped up to the tee with 9-Iron on the 141-yard par three.  With a bit of wind helping, the Brazos River flowing in the background, Flores made the perfect swing and recorded an ACE!  Congratulations to Art Flores for recording our first ACE of the season!


Hogan Flight:  Damian Smith (78), John Heintz (79), Jeff Green (81), Jeff Stahlhut (82), Hunter Hudgens (83).

Damian Smith captured his first victory of the season in the tightly contested Hogan Flight, with a round of 78.  Smith’s one-stroke victory included eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th hole, going out in 38 and in with 40.  John Heintz made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with runner up honors and round of 79, one-stroke back.  Heintz carded seven pars and birdies at holes 1, 3, and 12, going out in 38 and in with 41.  Jeff Green finished with third place honors and round of 81, carding nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th hole.  Green went out in 42 and with 39.  Jeff Stahlhut finished with fourth place honors and round of 82, carding nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th hole.  Stahlhut went out in 42 and with 40.  Hunter Hudgens finished with fifth place honors and round of 83.  Hudgens carded seven pars and birdie at the par-3 6th hole.


Senior Hogan Flight:  Eddey Neeley (76), Michael Walker (76), John Hilgers (81), L.P. Jones (83/39), Robert Hayward (83/42).


“Sudden Death Playoff” determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight on GCAmTour-Houston tour stop at River Ridge Golf Club.  Eddey Neeley and Michael Walker both carded rounds of 76 in regulation play so they went to the first tee for overtime.  Both players tied with par on the first playoff hole, both tied with bogey on the second playoff hole, and it was Neeley making par on the third playoff hole for the victory.  In regulation play, Neeley carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th hole, going out in 39 and with 37.  Walker carded nine pars and birdies at holes 3, 4, and 10 in regulation play, going out in 39 and with 37.  John Hilgers made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with third place honors and round of 81.  Hilgers carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 11th, going out in 39 and in with 42.  L.P. Jones finished with fourth place honors and round of 83/39, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th hole.  Jones struggled going out in 44 but rallied on the back nine for 39.  Robert Hayward returned to tour play and finished with fifth place honors and round of 83/42, carding six pars.  Hayward went out in 41 and in with 42.



Sarazen Flight:  Jeff Shen (86), Ross Gonzales (87), Kendall Hisey (88), Rudy Benavides (89), Dwayne London (90).

Jeff Shen is making a splash on GCAmTour-Houston and captured his second victory in as many starts.  Shen followed his win at Eagle Pointe with a win at River Ridge.  Shen carded a round of 86 for the one stroke victory, including six pars, and going out in 40 and in with 46.  Ross Gonzales finished with runner up honors and round of 87, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th hole.  Gonzales went out in 41 and in with 46.  Kendall Hisey finished with third place honors and round of 88, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th hole.  Hisey went out and in with matching 44.  Rudy Benavides finished with fourth place honors and round of 89, carding five pars and a birdie at the par-4 5th hole.  Benavides went out with 41 but struggled coming in with 48.  Dwayne London finished with fifth place honors and round of 90, carding five pars.  London went out with 47 and in with 43.



Senior Sarazen Flight:  Larry Viktorin (80), Marty Hodges (80), Mike Innes (82/39), Greg Faubion (82/42), Randy Adcock (82/43).

“Sudden Death Playoff” determines the winner of the Senior Sarazen Flight on GCAmTour-Houston tour stop at River Ridge Golf Club.  Larry Viktorin and Marty Hodges both carded rounds of 80 in regulation play so they went to overtime on the par-5 10th hole for the playoff.  On the first playoff hole it was Viktorin carding par for the win, marking his third consecutive win at River Ridge (Champion 12’, 13’, and 14’).  In regulation play Viktorin carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 3rd hole, going out in 42 and in with 38.  Marty Hodges carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 16th hole in regulation play, going out in 43 and with a stout 1-over par 37.  Mike Innes finished with third place honors and round of 82/39, carding eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th hole.  Innes went out in 43 and with 39.  Greg Faubion finished with fourth place honors and round of 82/42, carding seven pars and birdies at holes 3 and 11.  Faubion went out in 40 and in with 42.  Randy Adcock, former National Champion, finished with fifth place honors and round of 82/43.  Adcock carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-3 15th hole, going out in 39 and in with 43.



Jones Flight:  Xavier Bardy (88), Patrick Richardson (89), Blake Barnes (90/42), Aaron Seafous (90/46), Anthony Parrish (92/48).

Xavier Bardy made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and captured his third consecutive victory of the season, with a round of 88!  Bardy has been playing well and recorded wins at the Round Rock Open, The Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay-Major, and River Ridge.  Bardy carded five pars on the day, going out in 40 and in with 48.  Patrick Richardson finished with runner up honors and round of 89, just one-stroke back.  Richardson carded six pars on the day, going out in 43 and in with 46.  Blake Barnes finished with third place honors and round of 90/42, carding nine pars.  Barnes went out in 48 and in with 42.  Aaron Seafous finished with fourth place honors and round of 90/46, including four pars.  Seafous went out in 44 and in with 46.  Anthony Parrish finished with fifth place honors and round of 92/48.  Parrish carded four pars on the day, going out in 42 and in with 48.


Senior Jones Flight:  Mark Dion (88), Mark Boles (89), Wayne Glover (90), Mike Murphy (91), Ray Bednar (92).

Mark Dion captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the field and round of 88.  Dion carded three pars and birdies at holes 3, 4, and 16, going out and in with matching 44.  Mark Boles finished with runner up honors and round of 89, just one-stroke back.  Boles carded three pars on the round, going out in 43 and in with 46.  Wayne Glover finished with third place honors and round of 90, again one-stroke back.  Glover carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole, going out and in with matching 45.  Mike Murphy, “The Silent Assassin”, captured fourth place honors and round of 91.  Murphy carded seven pars on the day, going out in 49 and finishing strong with 42 coming in.  Ray Bednar finished with fifth place honors and round of 92.  Bednar carded three pars on the round, going out in 45 and with 47.



Snead Flight:  Tom Eysenbach (90), Marcy Glidden (90), Art Henry (91), Javier Quintero (93), John Thomas (96).

“Sudden Death Playoff” determines the winner of the Snead Flight on GCAmTour-Houston tour stop at River Ridge Golf Club.  Tom Eysenbach and Marcy Glidden both carded rounds of 90 in regulation play so they went overtime to the par-5th 10th hole.  On the first playoff hole it was Eysenbach capturing the win, his first of the season.  In regulation play, Eysenbach carded six pars, going out in 46 and in with 44.  Glidden carded six pars on the day and started off slow on the front nine, going out in 50.  Glidden made a nice comeback coming in with a solid 40 back nine to get into the playoff.  Art Henry finished with third place honors and round of 91, just one-stroke back.  Henry carded three pars on the day, going out in 43 and in with 48.  John Thomas finished with fifth place honors and round of 96.  Thomas carded four pars on the day, going out and in with matching 48.

GCAmTour-Houston, Eagle Pointe Tournament Results, March 15, 2014


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston players face challenging weather conditions but manage to score low at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, Mont Belvieu, Texas.  The challenging weather produced very competitive scoring including a “sudden death” playoff.

The Course:  Eagle Pointe Golf Club, Mont Belvieu, Texas.  The course was in spring transition, slowly recovering from several freezes this year.  The course was over seeded with a mix of still dormant grasses, green and brown.  The greens were in good condition, recently top dressed but running smooth and medium-fast, running 9.0-9.5.     

The Weather:  A challenging weather day that produced a mix of clouds, overcast, waves of rain, and back to overcast/rain.  The temperatures were cooler in the morning warming up to the low 70’s.  The winds were steady from the SSW 8-10mph throughout the day, allowing competitive scoring.  

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Jeff Whitzel (76), Jonathan Simons (77/37), Travis Nichols (77/39), Lynn Cormier (78), Babak Mobasheri (82).

Jeff Whitzel returned to tour play and captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the field and round of 76.  Whitzel was steady on the round, carding seven pars and birdies at holes 5, 9, and 17.  Whitzel went out in 39 and in with 37.  Jonathan Simons finished with runner up honors and round of 77/37.  Simons carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 17th, going out in 40 and in with 37.  Travis Nichols followed up his victory at the Horseshoe Bay major with third place honors and round of 77/39.  Nichols carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 4th hole, out in 38 and in with 39.  Lynn Cormier finished with fourth place honors and round of 78, just one-stroke back.  Cormier carded eight pars and birdies at holes 5 and 18, going out in 41 and in with 37.  Babak Mobasheri finished with fifth place honors and round of 82, carding seven pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th hole.  Mobasheri went out in 40 and in with 42.


Palmer Flight:  Cedric Smith (76), Patrick Simons (77/39), McLeod Glass (77/41), Adam Anderson (79), Tino Flores (80).

Cedrick Smith captured his second victory of the season by one stroke over the field and round of 76.  Smith was solid on the round, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 7, 13, and 17, out with 40 and in with 36.  Patrick Simons finished with runner up honors and round of 77/39, carding eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole, out in 38 and in with 39.  McLeod Glass finished with third place honors and round of 77/41, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 1 and 2.  Glass went out in 36 and in with 41.  Adam Anderson finished with fourth place honors and round of 79, carding five pars and birdies at holes 3, 4, 11, and 12.  Anderson went out in 38 and with 41.  Tino Flores finished with fifth place honors and round of 80, one-stroke back.  Flores carded eight pars and birdies at holes 1, 9, and 17, out in 37 and in with 43.



Senior Palmer Flight:  Robert Corbello (72), Walter Menuet (79/39), Joe Sublett (79/40), Dennis Walsh (79/43), Allan Collier (80).

Robert Corbello has been playing at a high level as of late and captured his fourth victory of the season, following up his win at the Texas Open Major at Horseshoe Bay.  Corbello matched his best tournament round of the season with a one-over par 72, including thirteen pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12.  Corbello went out in 36 and in with 36 for the tournament low round.  Walter Menuet carded his best score of the season for runner up honors and round of 79/39.  Menuet carded twelve pars on the day, out in 40 and in with 39.  Joe Sublett finished with third place honors and round of 79/40, carding nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 7th, out in 39 and in with 40.  Dennis Walsh captured fourth place honors and round of 79/43, including thirteen pars.  Walsh started with eleven straight pars but faded coming in, out in 36 and in with 43.  Allan Collier finished with fifth place honors and round of 80, carding ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 13th hole, out in 41 and in with 39.


Hogan Flight:  Jeff Burke (82), Jeff Green (84), Mike Rayburn (85/42), Lance Miller (85/44), Steve Allison (86/43).

Jeff Burke captured his first victory of the season two strokes clear of the field and round of 82.  Burke carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 9th hole, out in 38 and in with 44.  Jeff Green finished with runner up honors and round of 84, carding seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 13th hole, out in 41 and with 43.  Mike Rayburn finished with third place honors and round of 85/42, carding eight pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th hole, out in 43 and in with 42.  Lance Miller finished with fourth place honors and round of 85/44.  Miller carded six pars and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 9th hole, the only EAGLE of the tournament.  Miller went out in 41 and in with 44.  Steve Allison finished with fifth place honors and round of 86/43, carding five pars and a birdie at the “most difficult” par-4 16th hole!


Senior Hogan Flight:  Michael Walker (80), Christopher Phillips (84), Ernie Dyer (85), Grant Faulconer (87), Bob Murphy (88/45).

Michael Walker captured his first win of the season with an impressive four-stroke victory and round of 80.  Walker carded eight pars and back-to-back birdies at holes 3 and 4, out in 36 and with 44.  Walker commented that his new caddie helped tremendously after dumping former caddie, Mike Rutkoski.  Christopher Phillips finished with runner up honors and round of 84, carding seven pars going out in 43 and with 41.  Ernie Dyer finished with third place honors and round of 85, carding seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 13th hole.  Dyer went out in 40 and in with 45.  Grant Faulconer finished with fourth place honors and round of 87, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-4 2nd hole.  Faulconer went out in 42 and in with 45.  Bob Murphy finished with fifth place honors and round of 88/45, carding five pars.  Murphy went out in 43 and in with 45.



Sarazen Flight:  Jeff Shen (90), Rick Houchins (92/46), Gary Gum (92/47/32), Dwayne London (92/47/33), Massimo Passini (92/48).

Jeff Shen made his tour debut in grand fashion by capturing his first victory two strokes clear of the field and round of 90.  Shen carded three pars and birdie at the par-5 9th hole, going out in 46 and in with 44.  Rick Houchins finished with runner up honors and round of 92/46, carding five pars and going out and in with matching 46.  Gary Gum captured third place honors and round of 92/47/32, carding one par one the day.  Gum went out in 45 and with 47.  Dwayne London finished with fourth place honors and round of 92/47/33, carding five pars on the day.  London went out in 45 and in with 47.  Massimo Passini finished with fifth place honors and round of 92/48, carding five pars on the day.  Passini went out in 44 and in with 48.



Senior Sarazen Flight:  Mark “Maddog” Maddox (84), Randy Adcock (86), Bob Gonzales (88), Olan Benge (90), Larry Viktorin (93).

Mark “Maddog” Maddox captured his first victory of the season two strokes clear of the field and round of 84.  Maddog was solid on the round, carding eight pars and a birdie at the par-3 15th hole, and going out in 42 and in with matching 42.  Randy Adcock, former National Champion, finished with runner up honors and round of 86.  Adcock carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 9th hole.  Adcock went out in 41 and in with 45.  Bob Gonzales finished with third place honors and round of 88, including seven pars.  Gonzales went out in 43 and in with 45.  Olan Benge finished with fourth place honors and round of 90, carding four pars.  Benge went out in 43 and in with 47.  Larry Viktorin finished with fifth place honors and round of 93, carding three pars and a birdie at the par-4 14th hole.  Viktorin went out in 46 and in with 47.



Jones Flight:  David Sipe (90/46/31), Wayne Glover (90/46/33/17), Lu Cormier (90/46/33/21), Anthony Parrish (92/46), Mark Dion (92/47).

“Scorecard Playoff” determines the winner in the tightly contested Jones Flight at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, Mont Belvieu, Texas.  With inclement weather setting in a scorecard playoff determined the winner of the Jones Flight as three golfers carded rounds of 90.  David Sipe captured the victory on the third tiebreaker and followed up his with at The Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay with a win at Eagle Pointe.  Sipe carded four pars on the day going out in 44 and in with 46.  Wayne Glover finished with runner up honors and round of 90/46/33/17, carding six pars.  Glover went out in 44 and with 46 as well, winning on the fourth tiebreaker.  Lu Cormier finished with third place honors and round of 90/46/33/21, carding six pars.  Cormier also went out in 44 and in with 46, losing the fourth tiebreaker.  Anthony Parrish finished with fourth place honors and round of 92/46, carding four pars on the round.  Parrish went out and in with matching nine’s of 46.  Mark Dion finished with fifth place honors and round of 92/47, carding five pars on the day.  Dion went out in 45 and with 47.



Snead Flight:  Myron Brown (91), Art Henry (95), Tom Eysenbach (96), Carl Eaton (98/51), Bryce Kocian (98/52).

Myron Brown captured his second victory of the season (Hyatt Hill Country) with an impressive round of 91; four strokes clear of the field.  Brown carded six pars on the round, going out in 45 and in with 46.  Art Henry finished with runner up honors and round of 95, carding two pars and birdies at holes 1 and 11.  Henry went out in 46 and with 49.  Tom Eysenbach finished with third place honors and round of 96, carding three pars.  Eysenbach went out in 47 and with 49.  Carl Eaton finished with fourth place honors and round of 98/51, carding three pars on the day.  Eaton went out in 47 and in with 51.  Bryce Kocian followed up his victories at Moody Gardens and Redstone with a fifth place finish at Eagle Pointe and round of 98/52.  Kocian carded six pars and went out in 46 but faded coming in with 52.
