a “Sudden Death Playoff” headlines the day’s events at High Meadow Ranch Golf
Club, Magnolia, Texas.
The Course:
High Meadow Ranch Golf Club, Magnolia, Texas. The course was in beautiful condition with
green tees, fairway, and light rough.
The course received about two inches of rain the day before making
conditions soft and slow. The greens
were in good condition, smooth and medium fast, running 9.5.
The Weather:
It was a nice day to be outside with a mix of blue sky, clouds, and
sunshine. The temperatures were in the
mid to upper 80’s. The winds were
steady from the ESE 10-15mph throughout the day, challenging the players.
The Tournament:
Championship Flight:
Travis Nichols (72), Cooper Abercrombie (80/37), Scott Waltrip (80/41),
Nelson Fuertes II (81/35), Martin Nealey (81/38).
Travis
Nichols, reining Texas Open Champion at Horseshoe Bay, captured his third
victory of the season. Nichols was
solid with a round of even-par 72 and carded twelve pars and birdies at holes
2, 17, and 18 en route to an eight-stroke victory. Nichols went out and in with matching nine’s of 36. Cooper Abercrombie finished with runner up
honors and round of 80/37. Abercrombie
carded ten pars and birdies at holes 5 and 16, going out in 43 and with
37. Scott Waltrip finished with third
place honors and round of 80/41.
Waltrip carded seven pars and birdies at holes 2 and 13, going out in 39
and in with 41. Nelson Fuertes II made
his tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 81/35. Fuertes carded eight pars and birdies at
holes 12, 14, and 16. Fuertes shot 46
on the front nine but rallied on the back nine with a 1-under par 35. Martin Nealey returned to tour action and
finished with fifth place honors and round of 81/38. Nealey carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 17th,
going out in 43 and in with 38.
Palmer Flight:
Tino Flores (73), Robert Corbello (75), Cedric Smith (78/37), Frank
Wallace (78/39), Dennis Walsh (80).
Tino
Flores captured his first victory of the season and in doing so, successfully
defended his title at High Meadow Ranch as repeat champion. Flores had a great day firing a one-over par
round of 73. Flores carded twelve pars
and birdies at holes 2, 3, and 18, going out in 36 and in with 37. Robert Corbello continues his amazing season
with another round in the low 70’s, finishing with runner up honors. Corbello’s round of 75 included thirteen
pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole, going out in 39 and in
with even-par 36. Cedric Smith
continues to play well and finished with third place honors and round of
78/37. Smith carded thirteen pars on
the day, going out in 41 and in with one-over par 37. Frank Wallace finished with fourth place honors and round of
78/39. Wallace carded eleven pars and a
birdie at the par-3 11th hole, going out and in with matching
39. Dennis Walsh finished with fifth
place honors and round of 80. Walsh
carded eleven pars on the round, going out and in with matching nine’s of 40.
Hogan Flight:
Leslie Henry (77), Jeff Stahlhut (80), Aaron Brougher (82), Vincent
Sloan (86), Lance Miller (88).
Leslie Henry returned to tour action and captured her first
victory of the 2014 season. In doing
so, Henry also successfully defended her title at High Meadow as repeat
Champion. Henry had a good day carding
a round of 5-over 77 with fourteen pars, going out in 37 and in with 40. Jeff Stahlhut finished with runner up honors
and round of 80, carding ten pars and a birdie at the par-4 17th
hole. Stahlhut went out in 41 and with
39. Aaron Brougher, Texas Open at
Horseshoe Bay Champion, finished with third place honors and round of 82. Brougher carded nine pars and a birdie at
the par-4 15th hole, going out in 39 and in with 43. Vincent Sloan finished with fourth place
honors and round of 86. Sloan carded
nine pars on the day, going out in 45 and in with 41. Lance Miller finished with fifth place honors and round of
88. Miller carded six pars on the round,
going out in 45 and in with 43.
Senior Hogan Flight:
Ernie Dyer (82/41), George Smith (82/43), Glynn Aldredge (84/39), Vernon
Wells (84/42/29/14/3), Chris Neeley (84/42/29/14/5).
“Sudden
Death Playoff” determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at High Meadow
Ranch Golf Club, Magnolia, Texas. Ernie
Dyer and George Smith both carded rounds of 82 in regulation play to force the
playoff. On the first playoff hole both
golfers tied with par. On the second
playoff hole both golfers tied with par.
With daylight fading the contest was determined by a scorecard playoff
and Dyer captured the victory with a back nine total of 41 vs. 43 for
Smith. Dyer captured his first tour
victory and in regulation play carded ten pars, going out and in with matching
nine’s of 41. Smith carded ten pars in
regulation play, going out in 39 and in with 43. Glynn Aldredge finished with third place honors and round of
84/39, carding six pars and birdies at holes 2 and 16. Aldredge went out in 45 but rallied for 39 on
the back nine. Vernon Wells finished
with fourth place honors and round of 84/42/29/14/3. Wells carded six pars and a birdie at the most difficult hole on
the course, the par-4 8th.
Wells went out and in with matching nine’s of 42. Chris Neeley finished with fifth place
honors and round of 84/42/29/14/5.
Neeley carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-3 11th hole,
going out and in with matching nine’s of 42.
Sarazen Flight:
David Fok (85), Rick Smalley (86/41), Ross Gonzales (86/43/28), Kyle Young
(86/43/29/12), Gary Gum (86/43/29/13).
David
Fok captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the field and
round of 85. Fok needed every shot in
the tightly contested Sarazen Flight and his round of 85 included seven pars
and a birdie at the par-3 16th hole. Fok went out in 47 but rallied on the back nine with a 2-over
38. Rick Smalley finished with runner
up honors and round of 86/41. Smalley
carded seven pars, going out in 45 and with 41. Ross Gonzales finished with third place honors and round of
86/43/28. Gonzales carded seven pars
and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole, going out and in with matching
nine’s of 43. Kyle Young finished with
fourth place honors and round of 86/43/29/12. Young carded seven pars on the
day, going out an in with matching nine’s of 43. Gary Gum finished with fifth place honors and round of
86/43/29/13. Gum carded eight pars on
the day, going out and in with matching nine’s of 43.
Senior Sarazen Flight:
Mark Kirby (79), Will Whitley (83), Michael Bell (85), Keith Gannon
(86/40), Craig Duncan (86/44).
Mark
Kirby captured his first win of the 2014 with a round of 79, en route to a
four-stroke victory. Kirby had a great
day, carding eight pars and birdies at holes 2 and 3. Kirby went out in 38 and in with 41. Will Whitley finished with runner up honors and round of 83. Whitley carded seven pars and a birdie at
the par-4 3rd hole, going out in 39 and in with 44. Michael Bell finished with third place
honors and round of 85. Bell carded six
pars and birdies at holes 2 and 18, going out in 41 and in with 44. Keith Gannon finished with fourth place
honors and round of 86/40. Gannon
carded five pars and birdies at holes 10 and 13. Gannon went out in 46 and in with 40. Craig Duncan finished with fifth place honors and round of
86/44. Duncan carded nine pars on the
day, going out in 42 and with 44.
Jones Flight: Mark
Dion (85), Blake Barnes (86), Patrick Richardson (93/44), Ray Bednar (93/46),
Wayne Glover (95/46).
Mark
Dion has found his game as of late and captured his second victory of the
season in his last three starts. Dion
needed every stroke in the tightly contested Jones Flight, as his round of 85
was good for a one-stroke victory. Dion
carded eight pars on the day, going out in 45 and in with 40. Blake Barnes finished with runner up honors
and round of 86. Barnes carded five
pars and birdies at holes 2 and 10, going out in 40 and in with 46. Patrick Richardson finished with third place
honors and round of 93/44. Richardson
carded four pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole, going out in 49
and in with 44. Ray Bednar finished
with fourth place honors and round of 93/46.
Bednar carded two pars on the round, going out in 47 and in with 46. Wayne Glover finished with fifth place
honors and round of 95/46. Glover
carded four pars on the day, going out in 49 and in with 46.
Snead Flight:
Javier Quintero (92), Stephen Sater (98), Carl Eaton (99), Tom Eysenbach
(100), Dave Salsgiver (103/53).
Javier
Quintero, winner of the Bayou Classic at Lake Charles, captured his second
victory of the season with an impressive six-stroke clear performance and round
of 92. Quintero carded three pars on
the day, going out in 45 and with 47.
Stephen Sater finished with runner up honors and round of 98. Sater carded two pars on the day, going out
in 50 and in with 48. Carl Eaton
finished with third place honors and round of 99. Eaton carded five pars on the round, going out in 47 and in with
52. Tom Eysenbach finished with fourth
place honors and round of 100.
Eysenbach carded one par on the day, going out and in with matching
nine’s of 50. Dave Salsgiver finished
with fifth place honors and round of 103/53.
Salsgiver carded three pars on the day, going out in 50 and in with 53.
