The Club, host to the Katy Classic on the Houston Tour, always seems to have nice conditions in early spring, and this round had a chill in the air. Cloud cover by starting time, with some hints of rain, the day was filled with moisture in the air. More importantly, the lakes, ponds and drainage areas caused more problems for the players, than the stuff out of the sky.
RESULTS:
Championship Flight: Coming off a win at the Arizona Open Major Championship, the site of the Waste Management Phoneix Open on the PGA Tour, in December, Andrew Williams of College Station, TX, kept it rolling. In spite of a tough score on the par 3 - 12th, Williams was able to pick up his second win of the season with plenty to spare. First time players, Van Perrin of Kingwood, TX, grabbed the runner up spot, with Sugar Land, TX, member Orlando Morrisette, rounding out the top three.
Palmer Flight: Spring, TX, player Tony Eno, sidelined from the tour for the past few years, came back with a vengeance. Eno made the most of a pair of birdies to outlast, Scott Mayes of Beaumont, TX, for the Championship, by one stroke. Four strokes back of Mayes, Mike Karlin, with a birdie on the par 4 - 14th, took home the third-place finish.
Hogan Flight: Kevin Fontenot of Corpus Christi, TX, won at the January 2018 Coastal Bend Championship in his neck of the woods, but took 14 events to find the top of the podium again. Fontenot, with a pair of birdies on the day, cleared Cypress, TX, player Kyle Standley by two strokes. Three strokes back of Standley, Rick Houchins, of Las Colinas, TX, rounded out the top three.
Senior Hogan Flight: Working his way back to the Senior Palmer Flight, Jim Penn of Houston, TX, continued on his winning ways. Sweeping the weekend in Miami, FL, earlier in the year, including the Doral Amateur Major Championship, Penn picked up his third win of the season. Three strokes back, Alvin, TX, member Michael Clawson, with a birdie on the par 3-3rd, grabbed the runner-up finish. Two strokes back of Clawson, Paul Atkinson of Bryan, TX, with a birdie of his own on the par 5 - 15th, took the final podium spot.
Sarazen Flight: Playing in his second event on tour, Matthew Rush of Iola, TX, kept his scoring low, to win the Championship six strokes clear of second. Houston, TX, resident Ferdinand Andres, grabbed the runner-up finish, one stroke clear of Logan Landry of Woodlake, LA, with a birdie on the par 4-8th rounding out the top three.
Senior Sarazen Flight: Set up in a pairing with two guys that were clearly not focused on winning a tournament, it appeared that Greg Faubion of Richmond, TX, welcomed the distractions. With two birdies in three holes, on the par 4 -11th and par 4 - 13th, Faubion, snarred the Championship, his second in as many attempts by six strokes. Denver Tour traveler, Tony Solano of Aurora, CO, picked up the second place finish, with Olan Benge of Wharton, TX, taking home the third place honors.
Jones Flight: Playing in his third event of the points season, Spring, TX, player Kevin Montague, outlasted, Neil Macdonald, of Huntsville, TX, by a single stroke for the win with Dennis Don of Houston, TX, rounding out the top three.
Snead Flight: Finishing in the runner-up spot on a cold day in Kerrville, TX, on Saturday, Eugene Hanley of San Antonio, TX, made the trip worth his while, with the possible exception of a speeding ticket along the way. Hanley, with a birdie on the par 5 - 6th, picked up his third win of the points season. Playing in his first event on tour, Waller, TX, member Denis Corleto, with a birdie on the par 5 - 4th, grabbed the second place finish, with another San Antonio, TX, traveler, Bill Russell, finishing in third.
