GCAmTour-Houston, The Woodlands Tournament Course Event Results, July 7, 2014

Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston, July 7, 2014.  The Woodlands Tournament Course lived up to its name and provided the perfect venue in “Tournament Condition” for GCAmTour-Houston Players.  A beautiful day with mild winds combined with great course conditions produced competitive scoring with several flights decided by one-stroke!

The Course:  The Woodlands Tournament Course, The Woodlands, Texas.  The course was in “Tournament Condition” with green tees, fairways, and thick rough.  The greens were in near perfect condition, smooth and fast, running 10+.

The Weather:  A beautiful summer day along the Texas Gulf Coast, mildly hot with calm winds from the SSE.  It was a great day to be outside with a mix of clouds, sunshine, and blue sky.  The temperatures were in the lower to mid 90’s, hot and humid.  The winds were relatively calm from the SSE 5+mph for most of the day.

The Tournament:

Championship Flight:  Dennis Reiner Jr. (76), Martin Nealey (77), Sean Fenton (79/41), Daniel Lokey (79/43), Gordon Wagner (82).

Dennis Reiner Jr. earned his first victory of the 2014 season in the tightly contested Championship Flight at The Woodlands Tournament Course.  Reiner Jr’s tournament low round of 76 included twelve pars and a birdie at the par-5 15th hole, going out in 39 and with 1-over par 37.  Martin Nealey returned to tour action and finished with runner up honors and round of 77, just one-stroke back.  Nealey carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 6th hole.  Nealey went out in 39 and in with 2-over par 38.  Sean Fenton made the trip down from the DFW worthwhile and finished with third place honors and round of 79/41.  Fenton, fresh off his Major Victory at San Antonio-La Cantera, carded nine pars and birdies at holes 4 and 13.  Fenton went out in 38 and in with 41.  Daniel Lokey finished with forth place honors and round of 79/43.  Lokey carded twelve pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole, going out in one over par-37 and in with 43.  Gordon Wagner finished with fifth place honors and round of 82.  Wagner carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-5 15th hole, going out and in with matching nines of 41.

Palmer Flight:  Rick Keszeg (78), Frank Wallace (80), Ron Finnerty (81/40), Randy Pittman (81/42), Jacob Morton (83).

Rick Keszeg appears to have successfully made the flight promotion from Hogan to Palmer by capturing his third victory of the season.  Keszeg’s round of 78 was two strokes clear and included ten pars and birdies at holes 12 and 15.  Keszeg went out in 40 and in with a 38.  Frank Wallace finished with runner up honors and round of 80.  Wallace carded ten pars on the day and made nothing worse than bogey, going out and in with matching nines of 40.  Ron Finnerty made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with third place honors and round of 81/40.  Finnerty carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-4 10th hole, going out in 41 and with a 40.  Randy Pittman made his tour debut and finished with forth place honors and round of 81/42.  Pittman carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-5 6th hole, going out in 39 and in with 42.  Jacob Morton made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour and finished with fifth place honors and round of 83.  Morton carded nine pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12, going out in 44 and in with a 39.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Dennis Walsh (78), Traylor Sells (79), David Arnold (80/37), Joe Sublett (80/40), Harold Jackson (83/41).

Dennis Walsh earned his first victory of the 2014 season, in the tightly contested Senior Palmer Flight, by one stroke over the field and round of 78.  Walsh arrived just before the tournament started and went straight from the car to cart without warming up.  Walsh may want to consider this strategy going forward as it produced the winning round of 78.  Walsh carded ten pars and birdies at holes 12 and 15, going out and in with matching nines of 39.  Traylor Sells finished with runner up honors and round of 79.  Sells carded twelve pars on the day and managed to keep the big numbers off the scorecard, going out in 39 and in with a 40.  David Arnold seems to have found his game as of late and finished with third place honors and round of 80/37, his lowest of the season.  Arnold carded six pars and birdies at holes 5, 12, and 13.  Arnold went out in 43 and with a 1-over par 37.  Joe Sublett finished with forth place honors and round of 80/40.  Sublett carded seven pars and birdies at holes 4 and 12.  Sublett went out and in with matching nines of 40.  Harold Jackson finished with fifth place honors and round of 83/41.  Jackson carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-5 15th hole, going out in 42 and in with a 41.

Hogan Flight:  Chris Stavinoha (83), James Sheppeard (84), Derrick Matthews (86), Aaron Brougher (87), Jeff Stahlhut (88/44).

Chris Stavinoha is playing well as of late and recorded his second victory of season in his last four starts.  Stavinoha also carded his lowest tournament round of the season, 83.  Stavinoha carded nine pars on the day, going out in 41 and in with a 42.  James Sheppeard finished with runner up honors and round of 84, matching his score from the last event at The Woodlands Player Course.  Sheppeard carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th hole, going out in 40 and in with a 44.  Derrick Matthews made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour and finished with third place honors and round of 86.  Matthews carded ten pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 18th hole, going out in 41 and in with a 45.  Aaron Brougher followed up his victory at the San Antonio Major at La Cantera with a fourth place finish at The Woodlands Tournament Course.  Brougher’s round of 87 included eight pars and birdies at holes 5 and 12, going out in 45 and in with a 42.  Jeff Stahlhut finished with fifth place honors and round of 88/44.  Stahlhut carded seven pars on the but couldn’t keep the big number off the scorecard, going out and in with matching nines of 44.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Chris Neeley (82), Glynn Aldredge (84/42), Robert Hayward (84/44), John Hart (86), George Smith (88/41).

Chris Neeley captured his first victory of the 2014 season two strokes clear of the field and round of 82.  This was Neeley’s lowest tournament round since the season began back in October at Cypress Lakes where he carded a 78.  Neeley carded seven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 6, going out in 40 and in with a 42.  Glynn Aldredge finished with runner up honors and round of 84/42.  Aldredge carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 15th hole.  Aldredge went out and in with matching nines of 42.  Robert Hayward finished with third place honors and round of 84/44.  Hayward carded seven pars and a birdie at the signature par-5 13th hole, going out in 40 and in with 44.  John Hart finished with fourth place honors and round of 86.  Hart carded seven pars on the round, going out in 46 and in with a 40.  George Smith finished with fifth place honors and round of 88/41.  Smith carded five pars and birdies at holes 13 and 16, going out in 47 and in with a 41.

Sarazen Flight:  Matt Purgahn (79), Ronnie Davis (89/44/31/15/6/4), Jeff Greenwood (89/44/31/15/6/5), Rick Smalley (90/40), Rick Houchins (90/45).

Matt Purgahn captured his first victory of the season with an amazing round of 79; ten strokes clear of the field.  Since April, Purgahn has been struggling and his scoring average over that period was 86.83.  It appears that the drought has ended; Purgahn carded nine pars and birdies at holes 3 and 12, going out in 39 and in with a 40.  Ronnie Davis made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with runner up honors and round of 89/44/31/15/6/4, carding seven pars on the day.  Davis went out in 45 and in with 44.  Jeff Greenwood finished with third place honors and round of 89/44/31/15/6/5, carding three pars and a birdie at the par-5 13th hole.  Greenwood went out in 45 and in with a 44.  Rick Smalley finished with fourth place honors and round of 90/40.  Smalley carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 13th hole, going out in 50 and in with a 40.  Rick Houchins finished with fifth place honors and round of 90/45.  Houchins carded six pars and a birdie at the par-5 13th signature hole.  Houchins went out and in with matching nines of 45.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Olan Benge (82), Mark Maddox (85), Doug Bass (86/40), Craig Duncan (86/42), Keith Gannon (86/43).

Olan Benge captured his second victory of the 2014 season with a three stroke clear round of 82.  It’s been since December when Benge claimed his last victory at Cinco Ranch with a matching round of 82.  Benge was steady on the round, carding six pars and birdies at holes 1 and 15.  Benge went out in 40 and in with a 42.  Mark “Mad Dog” Maddox hasn’t played as many events this season but he has been on a tear.  His last four starts have been 1st Place, T2, T2 and 2nd Place.  Over that time period his scoring average has been 84.  Maddox round of 85 included five pars and birdies at holes 13 and 16, going out in 45 and in with 40.  Doug Bass finished with third place honors and round of 86/40.  Bass carded five pars and birdies at holes 14 and 15, going out in 46 and in with a 40.  Craig Duncan finished with fourth place honors and round of 86/42.  Duncan carded nine pars on the day, going out in 44 and in with a 42.  Keith Gannon finished with fifth place honors and round of 86/43.  Gannon carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 2nd hole, going out and in with matching nines of 43.

Marshall Sweed captured his first tour victory of the 2014 season in the tightly contested Jones Flight and round of 94.  Sweed’s one stroke victory round, his lowest of the season, included seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 11th hole.  Sweed went out in 49 and in with a 45.  Terry Collins finished with runner up honors and round of 95/48/32, matching his lowest tournament round of 2014.  Collins carded two pars on the round, going out in 47 and in with 48.  Darrell Fontenot made the trip over from the Louisiana Tour worthwhile and finished with third place honors and round of 95/48/34.  Fontenot carded three pars on the round, going out in 47 and in with a 48.  Marcy Glidden finished with fourth place honors and round of 96, just one-stroke back.  Glidden carded two pars and a birdie at the par-3 3rd hole, going out and in with matching nines of 48.  Coy Dayton finished with fifth place honors and round of 97/45.  Dayton carded three pars on the day, going out in 52 and with a 45.
