GCAmTour-Houston, Redstone Tournament Results, May 20, 2012

GCAmTour players participate in a record field for a regular tour stop at Redstone’s Tournament Course.  144 registered players set the GCAmTour-Houston record for a one-day event!  Thanks for taking on the challenge of Redstone and being a part of Tour history!

The Course:  Redstone Tournament Course, Humble, TX.  The course was in good condition with green fairways and rough.  The winter grass was giving way to the Bermuda grasses that dominate the course in the summer and fall.  The greens were in transition, smooth, and running medium speed, 9.5.

The Weather:  A great day for golf with a mix of blue sky, sunshine, and clouds all day.  Temperatures were in the low 70’s in the morning and warmed up to the low 90’s in the afternoon.  The winds were calm most of the day from the SSW, 4-8 mph.   

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  John Jeffrey (74), Craig Wakefield (75), Lynn Cormier (76), Chad Carroll (77), Randy Tadlock (79).
John Jeffrey captured his third tour victory of the season (Qualified for Nationals) with a tournament low round of 2-over par 74.  Jeffrey was steady all day, carding 16 pars and two bogeys.  Craig Wakefield followed up his victory at The Woodlands Player with a runner up finish and round of 3-over par 75 on The Tournament Course at Redstone.  Wakefield carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 4 and 14.  Lynn Cormier finished with third place honors and round of 76.  Cormier carded ten pars and birdies at holes 3 and 12.  Chad Carroll finished with fourth place honors and round of 77, including eleven pars and birdies at holes 6 and 17.  Randy Tadlock finished with fifth place honors and round of 79, including eleven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Frank Wallace (75), Tino Flores (75), Aaron Pickering (76), James Temple (77), Martin Nealey (78).        
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Palmer Flight at Redstone.  Frank Wallace and Tino Flores both carded rounds of the 75 in regulation play.  On the first playoff hole it was Wallace just missing a birdie putt and making par for the victory.  Flores had a chance to tie but just missed his par putt.  Wallace’s victory was his second of the season.  In regulation play Wallace carded eleven pars and birdies on holes 1 and 18.  Flores carded nines pars and birdies on holes 6, 10, and 13 in regulation play.  Aaron Pickering followed up his victory at The Woodlands Player with a third place finish at Redstone and round of 76.  Pickering carded ten pars and birdies on holes 2, 6, and 10.  James Temple finished with fourth place honors and round of 77, including ten pars and birdies on holes 1 and 13.  Martin Nealey finished with fifth place honors and round of 78, carding twelve pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Jan Peebles (75), Traylor Sells (78/38), Tom Crea (78/40), Dusty Rhodes (78/42), Herb Reynolds (82).
Jan Peebles goes “back-to-back” and followed up his victory at The Woodlands Player with a victory at Redstone.  This marked Peebles third victory of the season (Qualified for Nationals).  Peebles carded thirteen pars and birdies on holes 8 and 13.  Traylor Sells finished runner up with a round of 78/38, including eleven pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Tom Crea finished with third place honors and round of 78/40, carding thirteen pars on the day.  Dusty Rhodes managed get through some pulled muscle pain and finished with fourth place honors and round of 78/42.  Rhodes carded twelve pars and a birdie at the 5th hole.  Herb Reynolds finished with fifth place honors and round of 82, including nine pars and a birdie at the 8th hole.

Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Gus Aldana (81), Keith Storey (82/41), John Hunt (82/42), Leslie Henry (82/43), Chris Stavinoha (84).  
Gus Aldana captured his fourth victory of the 2012 season (Qualified for Nationals) by one stroke over three players in the closely contested Hogan Flight.  Aldana needed every stroke on his round of 81, including nine pars and birdies at holes 1 and 4.  Keith Storey finished with runner up honors and round of 82/41, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 11 and 17.  John Hunt finished with third place honors and round of 82/42, including seven pars and a birdie at the 1st hole.  Leslie Henry is showing she can compete in the Hogan Flight and finished with fourth place honors and round of 82/43.  Henry carded nine pars on the day.  Chris Stavinoha finished with fifth place honors and round of 84.  Stavinoha carded six pars and birdies at holes 3, 4, 9, and 17.  Stavinoha’s birdie on the 9th was also closest to the pin and he won the set of irons, congratulations!


Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Doug Bass (79), Vernon Wells (79), Michael Castaneda (82), Kevin Thibodeaux (83), Bill Schuster (84).   
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at Redstone’s Tournament Course.  Doug Bass and Vernon Wells both carded rounds of 79 in regulation play.  On the first playoff hole both players carded bogey to tie.  On the second playoff holes it was Bass carding par for the victory, his first of the season.  In regulation play Bass carded eight pars and birdies at holes 6 and 12.  Wells carded fourteen pars and a costly triple on the 18th in regulation play.  Michael Castaneda finished with third place honors and round of 82, including six pars and birdies at holes 2, 3, 6, and 10.  Kevin Thibodeaux finished with fourth place honors and round of 83, carding ten pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Bill Schuster finished with fifth place honors and round of 84, including eight pars and a great birdie at the difficult 5th hole.


Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Matt Purgahn (81), James Sheppeard (83), Brandon Bellinger (84), Michael Esquivel (85), Massimo Passini (88). 
Matt Purgahn is one step closer to qualifying for Nationals with his second victory of the 2012 season.  Purgahn’s round was two strokes clear of the field and included seven pars and birdies at holes 6, 12, and 13.  James Sheppeard continues to play well and finished runner up with a round of 83.  Sheppeard carded ten pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Brandon Bellinger finished with third place honors and round of 84, including seven pars and a birdie at the 7th hole.  Michael Esquivel finished with fourth place honors and round of 85, one-stroke back.  Esquivel carded eight pars on the round.  Massimo Passini finished with fifth place honors and round of 88, including nine pars.


Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Marty Hodges (81), Bruce Beakley (84/40), Bob Gonzales (84/46), Mark Kirby (85), Mark Maddox (86).
Marty Hodges captured his first victory of the 2012 season three strokes clear of the field and round of 81.  Hodges got off to a fast start carding 2-over on the front nine and total of twelve pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.  Bruce Beakley finished with runner up honors and round of 84/40, including eight pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.  Bob Gonzales finished with third place honors and round of 84/46.  Gonzales carded five pars and birdies at holes 6 and 8.  Mark Kirby finished with fourth place honors and round of 85.  Kirby carded ten pars on his round.  Mark Maddox finished with fifth place honors and round of 86, including seven pars and a birdie at the 2nd hole. 


Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Phillip Sumang (85), Adam Bray (93), James Price (94/46), Victor Alvarado (94/47), Damian Shipley (95).
Phillip Sumang captured his first victory of the 2012 in impressive fashion, firing a round of 85 and winning eight strokes clear.  Sumang carded nine pars on the round.  Adam Bray finished with runner up honors and round of 93, carding four pars and a birdie at the difficult 18th hole.  James Price finished with third place honors and round of 94/46.  Price carded four pars on the round.  Victor Alvarado made his tour debut with the fourth place finish and round of 94/47, including five pars.  Damian Shipley finished fifth place with a round of 95.  Shipley carded five pars and birdies at holes 8 and 12. 


Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Neil MacDonald (87), David George (87), Lu Cormier (88), Troy Massey (93/46), Mark Dion (93/47).  
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Jones Flight at Redstone’s Tournament Course.  Neil MacDonald and David George both carded rounds of 87 in regulation play.  On the first playoff holes it was MacDonald capturing the victory and his second of the season.  MacDonald carded four pars and a birdie at the 16th hole in regulation play.  George had his best tournament finish this season, carding five pars.  Lu Cormier finished with third place honors and round of 88.  Cormier had the victory in her sights, carding eight pars and birdies at holes 10 and 16.  A few costly holes coming down the stretch made the difference.   Troy Massey finished with fourth place honors and round of 93/46, including three pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Mark Dion finished with fifth place honors and round of 93/47, carding four pars on the day.


Snead Flight:  Kristopher Bixby (87), Patrick Richardson (95/46), Robert Viator (95/52), Javier Quintero (105), Al Dyer (106).
Kristopher Bixby wins his second consecutive tournament in as many starts.  Bixby’s round of 87 was eight strokes clear of the field as he makes a bid for a Jones Flight promotion.  Bixby carded five pars on the round.  Patrick Richardson finished with runner up honors and round of 95/46, including four pars.  Robert Viator finished with third place honors and round of 95/52.  Viator carded five pars and a birdie at the second hole.  Javier Quintero finished fourth place with a round of 105.  Quintero carded three pars and a birdie at the difficult 11th hole.  Al Dyer finished with fifth place honors and round of 106, including a birdie at the 6th. 


Senior Snead Flight:  Tim Thayer (95), Rick Hagel (99), Dick Rutledge (104), Jim Lamberth (106), Ron Nelms (110).
Tim Thayer captured his second victory of the season, this time four strokes clear of the field with a round of 95.  Thayer carded three pars on the round.  Rick Hagel finished with runner up honors and round of 99.  Hagel carded five pars on his round.  Dick Rutledge finished with third place honors and round of 104.  Rutledge carded two pars and a birdie at the 7th hole.  Jim Lamberth finished with fourth place honors and round of 106, carding a par at the 12th hole.  Ron Nelms finished fifth place with a round of 110.  Nelms carded a par at the 7th hole.
