GCAmTour-Houston, The Wilderness Tournament Results, May 26, 2012

A rare ACE, a few EAGLES, and BIRDIES fly at The Wilderness in Lake Jackson, TX.  GCAm-Tour Houston tournament players take advantage of the good scoring conditions and scores go low.

The Course:  The Wilderness Golf Club, Lake Jackson, TX.  The course was in good condition with green fairways and rough.  The greens were in transition and running medium speed, 9-9.5.

The Weather:  A great day for golf with a mix of blue sky, sunshine, and clouds all day.  Temperatures were in the low 70’s in the morning and warmed up to the low 90’s in the afternoon.  The winds were calm most of the day from the SSW, 5-10 mph.   

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  Craig Wakefield (72), Randy Tadlock (77), Rich Vigil (79), Lynn Cormier (83), Thomas Smith (86).
Craig Wakefield captured his second victory of the season and matched the low tournament score of the event with an even-par 72.  Wakefield carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 2, 7, 13, and 18.  Randy Tadlock finished with runner-up honors and round of 77.  Tadlock carded eleven pars and a birdie at the par-3 8th hole.  Rich Vigil finished just two strokes back with a round of 79, carding ten pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.  Vigil was also our 50/50 raffle winner, congratulations!  Lynn Cormier did not match the round of 68 he fired here last year but managed to finish with fourth place honors and round of 83.  Cormier carded eight pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.  Thomas Smith finished with fifth place honors and round of 86, including seven pars and birdies at holes 10 and 14. 


Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Frank Wallace (74), Brandon Simons (77/37), Tino Flores (77/39), Travis Nichols (78), Jason Hollis (81/37).        
Frank Wallace successfully defended his title at The Wilderness, captured his second victory in a row, and qualified for Nationals.  Wallace’s two-over par round of 74 included fourteen pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Brandon Simons finished with runner-up honors and round of 77/37.  Simons carded nine pars and birdies at holes 7, 12, and 17.  Tino Flores continues to play well and finished with third place honors and round of 77/39.  Flores carded nine pars and birdies at holes 3, 5, and 16.  Travis Nichols finished just one stroke back with a round of 78.  Nichols carded thirteen pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Jason Hollis returned to tour play and finished with fifth place honors and round of 81/37.  Hollis carded nine pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Tom Crea (72), Jan Peebles (74), Allan Collier (77), Robert Corbello (80/42), Walter Menuet (80/44).
Tom Crea claimed his first tour victory of the season by matching the low round of the tournament with an even-par 72.  Crea was steady, carding twelve pars and birdies at holes 2, 5, and 13.  Jan Peebles continued his good play and finished runner up with a round of 2-over par 74.  Peebles carded ten pars and birdies at holes 12, 14, and 17.  Allan Collier had his best finish of the season with a round of 77, taking third place honors.  Collier carded ten pars and birdies at holes 4 and 9.  Robert Corbello finished with fourth place honors and round of 80/42.  Corbello carded ten pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.  Walter Menuet finished with fifth place honors and a round of 80/44.  Menuet had a crazy front nine start that included birdies at holes 1 and 6 and EAGLE-3’s at both front nine par-5’s, holes 2 and 7!

Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Keith Storey (79), Leslie Henry (79), Brenton Fillers (79), Ariel Donato (81), Brian Cox (82).  
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Hogan Flight at The Wilderness in Lake Jackson, TX.  Three golfer recorded rounds of 79 in regulation play so they went back to the first hole to determine the winner.  On the first playoff hole it was Storey making birdie to claim his first victory of the season.  Henry and Fillers tied the first playoff so they continued and on the second playoff hole it was Henry making par for runner-up honors.  Filler finished third place.  In regulation play, Storey’s round of 79 included nine pars and birdies at holes 3, 12, and 13.  Henry carded eight pars and birdies at holes 7 and 12.  Fillers carded eleven pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.  Ariel Donato made her tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 81.  Donato carded six pars and birdies at holes 7 and 15.  Brian Cox made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with fifth place honors and round of 82.  Cox carded eight pars on the day.


Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Steve Trickel (76), Kevin Thibodeaux (78), Craig Farris (79), Lee Brunell (82/42), Larry Smith (82/45).   
Steve Trickel made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile as he captured his first victory of the season with an outstanding round of 76.  Trickel carded six pars and birdies at holes 5, 12, 13, 14, and 17!  Kevin Thibodeaux finished with runner-up honors and round of 78.  Thidodeaux’s first tour round in the 70’s included ten pars and birdies at holes 5 and 7.  Craig Farris finished with third place honors and round of 79.  Farris carded thirteen pars on the round.  Lee Brunell finished with fourth place honors and round of 82/42.  Brunell carded eight pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.  Larry Smith finished with fifth place honors and round of 82/45, including nine pars and birdies at holes 4 and 6. 


Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Stacy Smith (82) Raymond Laird (84), Gary Gum (85), Jason Hollis (88/40), Robert Murphy (88/44).
Stacy Smith captured his first tour victory two strokes clear of the field and round of 82.  Smith carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole.  Raymond Laird finished with runner-up honors and round of 84.  Laird’s lowest tournament round included seven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Gary Gum finished third place with a round of 85, just one stroke back.  Gum carded five pars and a birdie at the 7th hole.  Jason Hollis finished fourth place with a round of 88/40.  Hollis carded nine pars on the round.  Robert Murphy finished with fifth place honors and round of 88/44.  Murphy carded six pars and birdies at holes 4 and 12.  


Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Mark Kirby (80), Jim Craig (82/41/25), Mark Maddox (82/41/27), Will Whitley (84), Lahn Nguyen (85).
Mark Kirby captured his second victory of the season by firing his lowest round on tour this year, 80.  Kirby carded eleven pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.  Jim Craig finished with runner-up honors and round of 82/41/25, just two strokes back.  Craig carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole.  Mark Maddox finished with third place honors and round of 82/41/27.  Maddox carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 2nd hole.  Will Whitley claimed fourth place honors and round of 84, including seven pars and birdies at holes 1, 8, and 11.  Lahn Nguyen finished with fifth place honors and round of 85.  Nguyen carded nine pars on the day.  David Smith finished T6 but had the shot of the season with an ACE on the par-3 16th hole.  Smith hit 5-iron into the par-3, landing on the front of the green with some top spin and the ball rolled all the way to the hole and dropped in for his first career HOLE-IN-ONE, CONGRATULATIONS!


Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Adam Bray (82), Mark Dion (84), Travis Doughty (87/41), Neil MacDonald (87/42), Randy Adcock (87/45).
Adam Bray captured his second victory of the season by carding his lowest round on tour this year, 82.  Bray has been playing well as of late and carded ten pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Mark Dion is another Jones player that has found his game lately and continues to play well.  Dion finished runner-up with a round of 84, including eight pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.  Travis Doughty finished with third place honors and round of 87/41, including seven pars and a birdie at the 14th hole.  Neil MacDonald finished with fourth place honors and round of 87/42, carding six pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.  Randy Adcock finished with fifth place honors and round of 87/45, including eight pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole. 


Snead Flight:  Kristopher Bixby (86), Elgin Amboree (88), Marcy Glidden (94/47), Gilbert Elizondo (94/48), Peter Lees (94/49).
Kristopher Bixby has been on fire his last three starts and continues to improve his game.  Bixby captured his third tour victory in a row, this time with his season low round of 86.  Bixby is making a statement, “move me to Jones”.  We will see on our next handicap revision on June 2nd.  Bixby carded six pars on the round.  Elgin Amboree continued his good play and finished with runner-up honors and round of 88, just two strokes back.  Amboree carded three pars on the round.  Marcy Glidden finished with third place honors and round of 94/47, including birdies at holes 8 and 14.  Gilbert Elizondo finished with fourth place honors and round of 94/48, including four pars.  Peter Less finished with fifth place honors and round of 94/49.  Lees carded four pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.
