GCAmTour-Houston, Eagle Pointe Results

The Course:  Eagle Pointe Golf Club, Mont Belvieu, TX.  The course was making its transition from winter to spring and was green and plush.  The beds had fresh mulch and pine straw.  The greens were in good condition, running true around 9.5-10.

The Weather:  A beautiful and great day for golf, with sunshine and blue sky all day.  Temperatures were in the low-mid 70’s early in the morning and warmed up rapidly to the mid 80’s.  The winds were from the South throughout the day, 8-12mph.

The Tournament:

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Frank Wallace (74), Patrick Simons (79), Adam Anderson (81), Brandon Simons (87), Dan Shimel (96).
Frank Wallace followed up his major victory at The Texas Open recently held at Horseshoe Bay with another tournament victory at Eagle Pointe.  Wallace was solid on his round of 74, carding thirteen pars and birdies at holes 1 and 13.  Patrick Simons finished runner up with a round of 79, including nine pars and birdies at holes 9 and 12.   Adam Anderson finished just two strokes back for third place honors, with a round of 81.  Anderson carded eight pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Brandon Simons made his tour debut with a forth place finish and round of 87.  Simons carded five pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Dan Shimel made his tour debut with a fifth place finish, carding a round of 96.  Shimel carded three pars on his round.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Traylor Sells (77), Jan Peebles (77), Tom Crea (79), Daryl Epperson (79), Arthur Flores (79).
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Palmer Flight at Eagle Pointe GC, Mont Belvieu, TX.  Traylor Sells and Jan Peebles both carded rounds of 77.  On the first playoff hole it was Sells carding par for his first victory of the season.  During regulation, Sells carded nine pars and birdies at holes 1 and 2.  Peebles carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 3 and 14.  Tom Crea finished third place with a round of 79/40, including eleven pars.  Daryl Epperson finished forth place with a round of 79/41, including twelve pars.  Arthur Flores made his tour debut with a fifth place finish and round of 79/42, including seven pars and birdies at holes 1, 3, 13, and 17.

Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Steve Smith (78), Rem McGehee (80), George Smith (84), Randy Mutz (85), Larry West (85).
It’s been a good month for Steve Smith as he completed the “Trifecta”.  The “Trifecta” is a rare accomplishment on the tour and seldom seen.  Steve Smith’s victory at Eagle Pointe was his third during the month of March and completed his Texas swing.  He won at Coyote Ridge in Dallas on 3/13, TeraVista in Austin on 3/19, and Eagle Pointe in Mont Belvieu on 3/20!  Rem McGehee finished runner up with a round of 80, carding ten pars and almost holed out on the par-3 third hole.  He got it within a scorecard length and holed the birdie putt.  George Smith captured third place honors with a round of 84, carding four pars and birdies at holes 9 and 12.  Randy Mutz finished forth place with a round of 85/41, carding seven pars (and he likes his new R11).  Larry West finished fifth place with a round of 85/46, carding nine pars.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Bob Brezina (74), Michael Walker (76), Christopher Phillips (76), Paul Bradley Rich (77), Rickey Felts (78).
Bob Brezina made his tour debut in fashion, capturing the victory by two strokes and round of 74.  Brezina was solid on his round, carding ten pars and birdies at holes 3, 9, and 11.  Michael Walker continues his good play and finished runner up with a round of 76/36, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 11 and 14.  Christopher Phillips finished with third place honors and round of 76/39, carding nine pars and birdies at holes 1, 11, and 17.  Paul Bradley Rich made his tour debut with a forth place finish and round of 77.  Rich carded ten pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.  Rickey Felts finished fifth place with a round of 78.  Felts carded nine pars and birdies at holes 8 and 17.

Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Justin Merendino (80), Jason Filey (81), Bruce Legrand (84),
Gus Aldana (85), Matt Purgahn (86).
Justin Merendino captured his second victory of the season by one stroke with a round of 80.  Merendino carded seven pars and birdies at holes 9 and 17.  Jason Filey made his tour debut with an impressive round of 81 and runner up finish.  Filey carded eight pars on the round.  Bruce Legrand finished third place with a round of 84.  Legrand carded nine pars on the day.  Gus Aldana finished forth place with a round of 85, including eight pars.  Matt Purgahn finished with fifth place honors and round of 86/43, carding four pars and birdies at holes 5 and 17.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  John Olsen (74), Mark Maddox (75), Don Gaddis (78), Larry Viktorin (82), Mark Kirby (86).
John Olsen made his tour debut with an incredible round of 74, to win by just one stroke.  Olsen carded ten pars and birdies at holes 8, 11, and 17.  Runner up, Mark Maddox carded the best tournament round he’s had all year, 75.  Maddox made twelve pars and birdies at holes 10 and 14.  Don Gaddis made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 78.  Gaddis carded twelve pars and a birdie at the 1st hole.  Larry Viktorin captured forth place honors with a round of 82, carding nine pars.  Mark Kirby finished with fifth place honors and round of 86/43, carding nine pars.

Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Gary Gum (85), James Sheppeard (87), Lee Isham (88), Javier Quintero (91), Jason Hollis (92).
Gary Gum captured his first victory of the season with his best score, 85.  Gum managed to win by two strokes, carding seven pars on the round.  James Sheppeard finished runner up with a round of 87.  Sheppeard carded six pars on the round.  Lee Isham captured third place honors with a round of 88, just one stroke back.  Isham carded five pars on his round.  Javier Quintero finished forth place, carding a round of 91.  Quintero carded nine pars on the round but just couldn’t keep the big numbers off his card.  Jason Hollis finished fifth place, just one stroke back with a round of 92.  Hollis carded five pars and a birdie at the difficult 4th hole.

Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Randy Adcock (82), William Senne (91), Alan Brumley (92), Carl Eaton (100), Chaman Aggarwal (105).
Randy Adcock, reining National Champion, captured his fifth victory of the season.  This was clearly his best round of the year as his previous tournament victories going back to October 2010 were rounds of 90, 91, 88, 94-91 major, and 82 at Eagle Pointe.  The next handicap revision on 4/2 may just send him to the Senior Sarazen?  William Senne finished runner up with a round of 91, carding nine pars on the round.  Senne couldn’t keep the big numbers off the card.  Alan Brumley finished just one stroke back, carding a round of 92 and finished third.  Brumley carded three pars and an amazing three birdies on holes 7, 8, and 12.  Carl Eaton made his tour debut with a round of 100, earning forth place honors.  Eaton carded four pars and a birdie at the 1st hole. Chaman Aggarwal was off his game and struggled to a round of 105.  Aggarwal finished fifth, carding four pars.

Snead Flight:  Kristopher Bixby (82), Clifford Glier (87), Tim Booth (95), Rick Clifton (96), Robert Viator (97).
Kristopher Bixby claimed his first Snead Flight victory with the lowest round he has ever shot on tour, 82.  Coming into the event, his previous scores were 107,106, 94, 95, 97-98 major, and 82 (where did that come from?).  Bixby carded eight pars and two birdies, on holes 12 and 17.  Clifford Glier made his tour debut with a runner up finish and round of 87.  Glier carded seven pars.  Tim Booth claimed third place honors with a round of 95.  Booth had five pars on his round.  Rick Clifton finished forth place for the second consecutive tournament with a round of 96, carding one par.  Robert Viator finished fifth place with a round of 97.  Viator managed three pars on the round.

Senior Snead Flight:  Lu Cormier (89), Tim Thayer (92), Cathay McGee (93), Dick Rutledge (94), Jerry Bridgens (100).
Lu Cormier captured her first tour victory three strokes clear of the field with a round of 89.  Cormier carded a total of seven pars on her round.  Tim Thayer finished runner up with a round of 92, including four pars.  Cathay McGee made her tour debut with a third place finish and round of 93.  McGee carded five pars on her round.  Dick Rutledge, former Eagle Pointe Champion, finished forth place with a round of 94.  Rutledge carded five pars on his round.  Jerry Bridgens finished fifth place with a round of 100/49, including four pars.
