GCAmTour-Houston, Cypress Lakes Tournament-2013 Season Opener, October 6, 2012

GCAmTour-Houston tournament players take advantage of optimal weather and course conditions and “GO LOW” at Cypress Lakes G.C., Cypress, TX.  Bruce Beakley and Jeff Stahlhut card “career low” tournament rounds.


The Course:  Cypress Lakes G.C., Cypress, TX.  The course was in good condition with green fairways and rough.  The greens were, medium-fast, running around 9-9.5.

The Weather:  A nice October day for golf with mild temperatures in the mid-80’s, cooling off in the late afternoon as a cold front arrived dropping temperatures into the 60’s.  The winds were calm most of the day and picked up late in the afternoon as the cold front arrived, N 9-10mph.

The Tournament: 

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Frank Wallace (75), Gregory Wessling (76), Stephen Asp II (77/38), Kevin Duke (77/39), Tino Flores (78).        
Frank Wallace captured his first victory of the 2013 season in the tightly contested Palmer Flight with a round of 75.  Wallace carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 10 and 13.  Gregory Wessling made his tour debut with a runner-up finish and round of 76, just one-stroke back.  Wessling carded fourteen pars on the round.  Stephen Asp II finished with third place honors and round of 77/38.  Asp II carded nine pars and birdies at holes 2, 12, 14, and 17.  Kevin Duke finished with fourth place honors and round of 77/39, including ten pars and birdies at holes 1 and 3.  Tino Flores finished fifth place with a round of 78.  Flores carded twelve pars on the day.


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Mark Edmondson (74), Walter Menuet (76), Tom Crea (77/38/23), Robert Corbello (77/38/25), Lynn Cormier (79).
Mark Edmondson made his tour debut with a victory in the Senior Palmer Flight.  Edmondson’s winning round of 74 included ten pars and birdies at holes 2, 3, and 7.  Walter Menuet finished with runner up honors and round of 76.  Menuet carded twelve pars and a birdie at the 8th hole.  Tom Crea finished with third place honors and round of 77/38/23, including ten pars and birdies at holes 13 and 14.  Robert Corbello finished with fourth place honors and round of 77/38/25.  Corbello carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 8 and 17.  Lynn Cormier finished with fifth place honors and round of 79.  Cormier carded twelve pars on the day.



Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Jeff Stahlhut (73), Leslie Henry (78), Jeff Green (79/40), Roger Masek (79/41), Chris Stavinoha (80).
Jeff Stahlhut carded a “career round-73” at Cypress Lakes to win the Hogan Flight five strokes clear of the field for his first victory of the 2013 season.  Stahlhut carded twelve pars and birdies at holes 12, 14, and 18 including a 2-under 34 back nine!  Leslie Henry finished with runner up honors and round of 78.  Henry carded ten pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Jeff Green finished with third place honors and round of 79/40, including seven pars and birdies at holes 1, 4, and 8.  Roger Masek finished with fourth place honors and round of 79/41.  Masek carded eight pars and birdies at holes 1, 6, and 8.  Chris Stavinoha finished with fifth place honors and round of 80, including ten pars and a birdie at the 8th hole. 


Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Bill Mathews (76), Christopher Phillips (79), Vernon Wells (80), George Carlisle (81/39), Michael Castaneda (81/40).
Fresh off his runner up finish at the National Championship, Bill Mathews captured his first victory of the 2013 season with a round of 76.  Mathews carded ten pars and birdies at holes 8, 14, and 18.  Christopher Phillips continued his solid play and finished with runner up honors and round of 79.  Phillips carded nine pars and birdies at holes 5 and 11.  Vernon Wells finished with third place honors and round of 80, just one-stroke back.  Wells carded eight pars and a birdie at the 2nd hole.  George Carlisle finished with fourth place honors and round of 81/39.  Carlisle carded nine pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Michael Castaneda finished with fifth place honors and round of 81/40, including seven pars and birdies at holes 11 and 17. 


Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Gary Gum (80), David Cox (81/37), Tony Smith (81/40), James Sheppeard (83), Rick Smalley (84).
Gary Gum captured his first victory of the season one stroke clear of the field with a round of 80.  Gum started slow and finished strong, 43-37 carding nine pars and birdies at holes 8 and 17.  David Cox finished runner up with a round of 81/37, including nine pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Tony Smith made the trip over from Austin worthwhile and finished with third place honors.  Smith carded ten pars on the round.  James Sheppeard finished with fourth place honors and round of 83.  Sheppeard carded nine pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Rick Smalley finished with fifth place honors and round of 84.  Smalley carded six pars and birdies at holes 3, 13, and 17.



Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Bruce Beakley (72), Lee Brunell (79/36), Roger Goembel (79/39), Jeff Burwinkel (79/40), Mark Kirby (80/39).
Bruce Beakley fires a “career low” round and low of the tournament with an even-par 72.  Beakley’s magical round included six pars and birdies at holes 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, and 16, for a 3-under 33 back nine!  Congratulations on the low round and victory!  Lee Brunell finished with runner up honors and round of 79/36.  Brunell carded seven pars and birdies at holes 13, 14, and 16.  Roger Goembel made his tour debut with the third place finish and round of 79/39.  Goembel carded four pars and birdies at holes 1, 6, 7, 11, and 14!  Jeff Burwinkel finished with fourth place honors and round of 79/40.  Burwinkel carded ten pars and birdies at holes 1 and 13.  Mark Kirby finished with fifth place honors and round of 80/39, including nine pars and a birdie at the 5th hole.


Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Stacy Smith (82), Adam Bray (83), Phillip Sumang (88/42), James Price (88/45), Patrick Richardson (90/43).
Stacy Smith captured his first victory of the season with a round of 82, one stroke clear of the field.  Smith carded six pars and birdies at holes 7 and 15.  Adam Bray finished with runner up honors and round of 83.  Bray carded seven pars and a birdie at the 14th hole.  Phillip Sumang finished with third place honors and round of 88/42.  Sumang’s round included six pars.  James Price finished with fourth place honors and round of 88/45.  Price carded five pars and a birdie at the 8th hole.  Patrick Richardson finished with fifth place honors and round of 90/43.  Richardson carded six pars on the day.



Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  David George (84), Troy Massey (86), Neil MacDonald (87), Rick Halprin (89), Michael Bell (90).
David George captured his first career tour victory and tournament victory with a round of 84.  George carded eight pars and a birdie at the 14th hole.  Troy Massey finished with runner up honors and round of 86.  Massey carded six pars and a birdie at the 14th hole.  Neil MacDonald finished with third place honors and round of 87.  MacDonald carded five pars on the day.  Rick Halprin finished with fourth place honors and round of 89.  Halprin carded seven pars and a birdie at the 16th hole.  Michael Bell finished with fifth place honors and round of 90, including five pars and a birdie at the 9th hole. 


Snead Flight:  Javier Quintero (86), Marcy Glidden (89/43), Dwaine Smith (89/45), Richard Schram (91/43), Rick Hagel (91/49).
Javier Quintero captured his first victory of the 2013 season with a round of 86, three strokes clear of the field.  Quintero got it going on the back nine, 39, and carded nine pars and a birdie at the 14th hole on the day.  Marcy Glidden finished with runner up honors and round of 89/43, including four pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Dwaine Smith finished with third place honors and round of 89/45.  Smith carded three pars and a birdie at the 13th hole.  Richard Schram finished with fourth place honors and round of 91/43, carding five pars on the day.  Rick Hagel, two-time winner at Cypress Lakes, finished with fifth place honors and round of 91/49.  Hagel carded three pars and a birdie at the 7th hole.
