GCAmTour-Houston, Moody Gardens Tournament Recap, January 26, 2013

GCAmTour-Houston players enjoy a great January day of golf at Moody Gardens in Galveston, TX.  Mild winds, sunshine, and seasonably warmer temperatures made for a great day of golf. 

The Course:  Moody Gardens Golf Course, Galveston, TX.  The course was in good condition with Paspalum turf throughout.  The greens were very good and running between 9.5-10.   

The Weather:  A beautiful January day for golf with sunshine, mixed clouds, and temperatures in the mid-70’s.  The winds were unseasonably light from the SSW 5-10mph, perfect for scoring conditions. 

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  John Jeffrey (78), Babak Mobasheri (78), Randy Tadlock (81), Travis Nichols (84), Milton Kirkwood (84), Neill Osborne (86).       
“Sudden Death” playoff determines the winner in the Championship Flight at Moody Gardens GC.  John Jeffrey and Babak Mobasheri both carded rounds of 78 in regulation play.  On the first playoff hole it was Jeffrey carding a par for the victory.  Jeffrey successfully defended his victory a Moody Gardens a year ago.  In regulation play Jeffrey carded thirteen pars.  Babak Mobasheri finished with runner-up honors and round of 78, carding fourteen pars.  Randy Tadlock finished with third place honors and round of 81, carding ten pars on the day.  Travis Nichols finished T4 with a round of 84.  Nichols carded nine pars and birdies at holes 1 and 9, but found trouble at 7 and 8.  Milton Kirkwood made his tour debut with a T4 finish and round of 84.  Kirkwood carded seven pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Neill Osborne finished with fifth place honors and round of 86, including five pars and a birdie at the 5th hole. 


Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Thomas Smith (76), Frank Wallace (83), Tino Flores (84), Vincent Sloan (85), Jake Webber (88).        
Thomas Smith captured his first victory of the season with a tournament low round of 76; an impressive seven strokes clear of the field.  Smith carded eight pars and birdies at holes 1, 5, 10, and 15 en route to victory.  Frank Wallace finished with runner-up honors and round of 83, including nine pars and a birdie at par-3 13th hole, nearly an ace.  Tino Flores finished just one stoke back for third place honors and round of 84.  Flores carded seven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 14.  Vincent Sloan made his tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 85, carding nine pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Jake Webber made his tour debut with a fifth place finish and round of 88.  Webber carded six pars and birdies at hole 8 and the difficult 18th. 


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Allan Collier (80), Art Flores (82), Traylor Sells (83), Walter Menuet (84), David Arnold (85), Robert Corbello (85).
It’s been a long time coming for veteran tour player Allan Collier.  Years of dedication and hard work finally paid off.  Collier captured his first tour victory two strokes clear of the field and round of 80.  Collier carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-5 5th hole en route to the victory.  Art Flores finished with runner-up honors and round of 82.  Flores carded nine pars on the day.  Traylor Sells finished with third place honors and round of 83, just one-stroke back.  Sells carded seven pars and birdies at holes 9 and 17.   Walter Menuet finished with fourth place honors and round of 84, one-stroke back.  Menuet carded eight pars and birdies at holes 5 and 15.  David Arnold finished T5 with a round of 85, including seven pars.  Robert Corbello finished T5 with a round of 85, carding ten pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.


Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Jeff Stahlhut (83), Scott Nagai (83), Jeff Burke (83), Jeff Green (85), Rick Keszeg (86).
“Sudden Death” playoff determines the winner of the Hogan Flight at Moody Gardens GC.  Jeff Stahlhut, Scott Nagai, and Jeff Burke all carded rounds of 83 in regulation play.  One the first playoff hole it was Stahlhut and Nagai moving on with bogey, Burke eliminated.  On the second playoff hole it was Stahlhut carding par for the victory, Nagai runner up.  In regulation play, Stahlhut carded ten pars, Nagai carded eight pars and birdies at holes 9 and 14, and Burke carded nine pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.  Jeff Green finished with fourth place honors and round of 85, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-5 5th hole.  Rick Keszeg finished with fifth place honors and round of 86, including five pars and birdies at holes 1 and 3. 


Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  John Olsen (80), Bill Mathews (81), Will Whitley (82), Christopher Phillips (83), Randy Tate (83).
John Olsen captured his first victory of the 2013 season by one stroke over the field and round of 80.  Olsen carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 5.  Bill Mathews finished with runner up honors and round of 81, just one-stroke back.  Mathews carded eleven pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.  Will Whitley finished with third place honors and round of 82.  Whitley carded four pars and birdies at holes 4, 8, 10, and 18.  Christopher Phillips finished with T4 honors and round of 83.  Phillips carded eight pars and birdies at holes 3 and 4.  Randy Tate also finished with T4 honors and round of 83.  Tate carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 14th hole. 


Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Stacy Smith (82), Hunter Hudgens (85/42), Blake Barnes (85/44), James Sheppeard (86), George Peddy (87), Kevin Le (87).
Stacy Smith captured his second victory of the season, this time three strokes clear of the field and round of 82.  Smith carded eight pars and birdies at holes 14 and 15 en route to victory.  Hunter Hudgens, Cy-Ranch High School golfer, made his tour debut and finished with runner up honors and round of 85/42, carding seven pars on the day.  Blake Barnes returned to tour play and finished with third place honors and round of 85/44.  Barnes carded nine pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  James Sheppeard finished with fourth place honors and round of 86.  Sheppeard carded ten pars but found trouble at the 8th hole.  George Peddy finished T5 with a round of 87, carding six pars on the day.  Kevin Le finished with T5 honors and round of 85, carding eight pars and some trouble at the 11th hole. 

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Jay Crawford (84), Jeff Burwinkel (85/40/26), Greg Faubion (85/40/27), Lahn Nguyen (87/43), Mark Kirby (87/44), Chuck Tucker (87/48).
Jay Crawford captured his first victory of the season one stroke over the field and round of 84.  Crawford carded an outstanding ten pars on the day.  Jeff Burwinkel finished with T2 honors and round of 85/40/26.  Burwinkel carded eight pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 3rd hole.  Greg Faubion finished with T2 honors and round of 85/40/27.  Faubion carded eight pars and a birdie at the 11th hole.  Lahn Nguyen finished with T4 honors and round of 87/43.  Nguyen carded seven pars and a birdie at the 15th hole.  Mark Kirby finished with T4 honors and round of 87/44, including nine pars.  Chuck Tucker finished with T4 honors and round of 87/48, carding six pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole. 


Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Bryan Young (84), Kris Bixby (86), Damian Smith (88), Kyle Young (89), James Price (91).
Bryan Young captured his first victory of season with an impressive round of 84, perhaps making his case for a promotion to the Sarazen Flight.  Young’s victory round included nine pars.  Kris Bixby continues to play well and finished with runner up honors and round of 86, carding six pars and birdies at holes 4 and 5.  Damian Smith finished with third place honors and round of 88.  Smith carded nine pars on the day.  Kyle Young finished with fourth place honors and round of 89.  Young carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 1st hole.  James Price finished with fifth place honors and round of 91, including six pars.  Shot of the day goes to Jones player Patrick Richardson for his EAGLE-2 at the par-4 15th hole!


Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Rick Halprin (88), David George (91), Neil MacDonald (93), Troy Massey (96), David Sipe (98).
Rick Halprin captured his first victory of the 2013 season three strokes clear of the field and round of 88.  Halprin cruised to victory by carding eight pars on the day.  David George finished with runner up honors and round of 91.  George carded four pars on the round.  Neil MacDonald finished with third place honors and round of 93, including six pars.  Troy Massey finished with fourth place honors and round of 96.  Massey carded six pars and birdie at the par-3 17th hole.  David Sipe made his tour debut by capturing fifth place honors and round of 98.  Sipe carded two pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 2nd hole.


Snead Flight:  Robert Viator (100), Danny Nunez (101), Carl Eaton (102), Jeremy Fang (106), Richard Schram (110). 
Robert Viator captured his first victory of the 2013 season just one stroke clear of the field and round of 100.  Viator carded seven bogeys and a par at the par-3 9th hole.  Danny Nunez made his tour debut with a runner up finish and round of 101.  Nunez carded six bogeys and pars at holes 1, 4, and 10.  Carl Eaton finished with third place honors and round of 102, including six bogeys and pars at holes 3, 4, and 16.  Jeremy Fang finished with fourth place honors and round of 106, carding five bogeys and pars at holes 6 and 15.  Richard Schram finished with fifth place honors and round of 110, including seven bogeys and a par at the 17th hole.
