GCAmTour-Houston, The Woodlands Player Course Tournament Results, June, 24, 2014


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston, June 24, 2014.  HOT, HUMID weather and calm winds combined with great course conditions produced competitive scoring and Playoffs!  Two “Sudden Death” scorecard playoffs headline the day’s events at The Woodlands Player Course, The Woodlands, Texas. 


The Course:  The Woodlands Player Course, The Woodlands, Texas.  The course was in beautiful condition with green tees, fairways, and rough.  The greens were in great condition, smooth and fast, running 10+.     

The Weather:  A HOT, HUMID day along the Texas Gulf Coast.  If you like it hot, it was a nice day to be outside with a mix of clouds, sunshine, blue sky, and later thunderstorms.  The temperatures were in the lower to mid 90’s, hot and humid.  The winds were relatively calm from the ESE 5-8mph for most of the day.  

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Travis Nichols (76), Aaron Pickering (77), Corey Freeland (80), Daniel Lokey (81), Nathan Ashley (89). 

Travis Nichols captured his fourth victory of the 2014 season with a matching low tournament round of 76.  Nichols also successfully defended his Palmer Flight victory from the 2013 season.  Nichols round of 76 included twelve pars and a birdie at the par-5 16th hole, going out and in with matching nines of 38.  Aaron Pickering finished with runner up honors and round of 77, just one-stroke back.  Pickering carded twelve pars and birdies at holes 2 and 14, going out in 37 and in with 40.  Corey Freeland finished with third place honors and round of 80, three strokes back.  Freeland carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-3 14th hole, going out and in with matching nines of 40.  Daniel Lokey made his tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 81.  Lokey carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-3 11th hole.  It was a tail of two nines for Lokey, going out in 1-over par 37 and in with 44.  Nathan Ashley finished with fifth place honors and round of 89.  Ashley carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 7th hole, going out in 45 and in with 44.


Palmer Flight:  Robert Corbello (76/38), Tino Flores (76/40), Joe Sublett (78), Dennis Walsh (81), Jeff Bankard (83).

“Sudden Death” scorecard playoff determines the winner of the Palmer Flight at GCAmTour-Houston event, The Woodlands Player Course.  Robert Corbello and Tino Flores both carded rounds of 76 in regulation play.  Due to inclement weather, a scorecard playoff determined the winner.  Corbello’s back nine total of 38 was two better than Flores for the victory, Corbello’s fifth win of the season.  Corbello’s matching low tournament round of 76 included twelve pars and birdies at holes 2 and 11, going out and in with matching nines of 38.  Tino Flores matching low tournament round of 76 included thirteen pars and a birdie at the difficult par-3 8th hole, going out in even par 36 and in with 40.  Joe Sublett finished with third place honors and round of 78, just two strokes back.  Sublett carded nine pars and birdies at holes 11 and 17, going out in 42 and in with even-par 36.  Dennis Walsh finished with fourth place honors and round of 81.  Walsh carded nine pars and birdies at holes 2 and 16, going out in 40 and with 41.  Jeff Bankard made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with fifth place honors and round of 83.  Bankard carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-5 7th hole, going out in 38 and in with 45.


Hogan Flight:  Aaron Brougher (79), Roger Masek (81), Matt Purgahn (83), James Sheppeard (84), Al Campo (87).

Aaron Brougher captured his second victory of the season two strokes clear of the field and round of 79.  Brougher carded six pars and birdies at holes 1, 14, and 16 in the tightly contested Hogan Flight.  Brougher went out in 42 and finished strong with a one-over par 37 back nine.  Roger Masek seems to have found his stroke and over his last three events has finished 1st, 2nd, and 2nd.  Masek’s runner up round included nine pars and a birdie at the par-3 14th, going out in 42 and with three-over 39.  Matt Purgahn finished with third place honors and round of 83.  Purgahn carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 17th, going out in 45 and with a two-over par 38.  James Sheppeard finished with fourth place honors and round of 84, just one-stroke back.  Sheppeard carded nine pars on the day, going out and in with matching nines of 42.  Al Campo followed up his victory at The Wilderness with a fifth place finished at the Woodlands Player.  Campo carded a round of 87 that included five pars and a birdie at the par-3 11th, going out in 45 and in with 42.


Senior Hogan Flight:  Mike Hafner (78/37), Bruce Beakley (78/38), Robert Hayward (78/41), Steve Trickel (79), Mike Innes (80/40/24).

“Sudden Death” scorecard playoff determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at GCAmTour-Houston event, The Woodlands Player Course.  Mike Hafner, Bruce Beakley, and Robert Hayward carded rounds of 78 in regulation play.  Due to inclement weather, a scorecard playoff determined the winner.  Hafner’s back nine total of one-over par 37 was the best of the group and he captured his second win of the season.  Hafner carded ten pars and birdies at holes 6 and 13 in regulation play, going out in 41 and in with 37.  Bruce Beakley finished with runner up honors and round of 78/38.  Beakley carded eight pars and birdies at holes 3, 7, and 11, going out in 40 and in with 38.  Robert Hayward finished with third place honors and round of 78/41.  Hayward carded nine pars and birdies at holes 1, 4, and 12, going out in one-over par 37 and in with 41.  Steve Trickel finished with fourth place honors and round of 79, just one-stroke back.  Trickel carded eleven pars on the day and nothing worse than bogey.  Trickel went out in two-over par 38 and in with 41.  Mike Innes finished with fifth place honors and round of 80/40/24.  Innes carded ten pars and a birdie at the par-3 14th, going out and in with matching nines of 40.


Sarazen Flight:  Kristopher Bixby (86), Adam Bray (87/45/29/13), Rick Houchins (87/45/29/15), Dwayne London (90), Kendall Hisey (91/47).
Kristopher Bixby captured his first victory of the 2014 season in the tightly contested Sarazen Flight and round of 86.  Bixby’s round was one-stroke clear of the field and included six pars, going out in 42 and in with 44.  Adam Bray finished with runner up honors and round of 87/45/29/13.  Bray carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 17th hole, going out in 42 and in with 45.  Rick Houchins finished with third place honors and round of 87/45/29/15.  Houchins carded three pars and birdies at holes 4, 8, and 16, going out in 42 and in with 45.  Dwayne London finished with fourth place honors and round of 90.  London carded four pars and a birdie at the par-4 6th hole, going out in 43 and in with 47.  Kendall Hisey finished with fifth place honors and round of 91/47.  Hisey carded four pars on the day, going out in 44 and in with 47.


Senior Sarazen Flight:  Alan Joseph (79), Keith Gannon (80), Greg Faubion (85), Jim Craig (86), Craig Duncan (87).

Alan Joseph recorded a couple of milestones with his victory at The Woodlands Player Course.  First, it was Joseph’s first win of the 2014.  It was also Joseph’s first time to break 80 in tournament play and third time to break 90.  Joseph’s breakout round was good for the one-stroke win and included nine pars and a birdie at the par-3 14th hole, going out in 41 and in with two-over par 38.  Keith Gannon finished with runner up honors and round of 80, just one-stroke back.  Gannon carded eleven pars on the day, going out in two-over par 38 and in with 41.  Greg Faubion finished with third place honors and round of 85.  Faubion carded five pars and birdies at holes 5 and 16, going out in 41 and in with 44.  Jim Craig finished with fourth place honors and round of 86.  Craig carded eight pars and a birdie at the difficult par-3 8th hole, going out in 40 and in with 46.  Craig Duncan finished with fifth place honors and round of 87, just one-stroke back.  Duncan carded six pars and birdies at holes 1, 5, 16, and 18, going out in two-over par 38 and in with 49.


Jones Flight:  Blake Barnes (90), David Sipe (91), Ray Bednar (93), Mike Murphy (95/47/28), George Torres (95/47/31).

Blake Barnes captured his third victory of the 2014 season in the tightly contested Jones Flight and round of 90.  Barnes one stroke clear victory included seven pars, going out in 46 and in with 44.  David Sipe finished with runner up honors and round of 91, just one-stroke back.  Sipe carded four pars and a birdie at the par-5 7th hole, going out in 47 and in with 44.  Ray Bednar finished with third place honors and round of 93.  Bednar carded two pars on the round, going out in 45 and in with 48.  Mike Murphy finished with fourth place honors and round of 95/47/28.  Murphy carded five pars on the round, going out in 48 and in with 47.  George Torres finished with fifth place honors and round of 95/47/31.  Torres carded three pars and a birdie at the par-5 16th hole.  Torres went out in 48 and in with 47.


Snead Flight:  Carl Eaton (89), Doyle Flemming (104), Richard Schram (105/49), Gene Macha (105/54), Robert Viator (108).

Carl Eaton captured his second victory of the 2014 season in dramatic fashion over the field.  Eaton’s margin of victory was 15 strokes, the largest of the 2014 season.  It was also Eaton’s first tournament round score of the 2014 under 90.  Eaton carded a round of 89 that included four pars and birdies at holes 6, 7, and 16.  Eaton went out in three-over par 39 and in with 50.  Doyle Flemming made the trip down from the DFW Tour worthwhile and finished with runner up honors and round of 104.  Flemming carded four pars on the day, going out in 55 and in with 49.  Richard Schram finished with third place honors and round of 105/49.  Schram carded four pars on the day, going out in 56 and in with 49.  Gene Macha made his tour debut with a top-3 finish and round of 105/54.  Macha carded two pars on the day, going out in 51 and in with 54.  Robert Viator returned to tour action and finished with fifth place honors and round of 108.  Viator carded one par on the day, going out in 55 and in with 53.

GCAmTour-Houston, Walden on Lake Conroe Tournament Results, June 7, 2014


Jeff Zemencsik (Houston, TX) – GCAmTour-Houston, June 7, 2014.  Hole-in-One!   John Hilgers recorded his first “ACE” of the 2014 season on the beautiful par-3 12th hole island green overlooking Lake Conroe.  The “ACE” was his forth of his career and was struck with a 9-iron from 130yds, playing with a Srixon ball.  Playoffs!  Two “Sudden Death” playoffs headline the day’s events at Walden on Lake Conroe, Montgomery, Texas. 


The Course:  Walden on Lake Conroe, Montgomery, Texas.  The course was in beautiful condition with green tees, fairways, and rough.  The greens were in good condition, grainy and medium fast, running 9.5.     

The Weather:  Another beautiful day along the Texas Gulf Coast and a nice day to be outside with a mix of blue sky, clouds, and sunshine.  The temperatures were in the lower to mid 90’s, hot and humid.  The winds were relatively calm from the S 5-8mph throughout the day.  

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Jeff Whitzel (76), Denny Reiner (79), Neill Osborne (82), Dennis Reiner Jr. (83), Katy Kile (85).

Jeff Whitzel captured his second victory of the season and is now one win away from Nationals qualifying.  Whitzel fired the low round of the tournament with a 4-over par 76 played from 6,700+ yds.  Whitzel’s round included fourteen pars against four bogeys, going out and in with matching nines of 38.  Denny Reiner made his tour debut and finished with runner up honors and round of 79.  Reiner carded nine pars and a birdie at the par-3 6th hole, going out in 39 and in with 40.  Neill Osborne finished with third place honors and round of 82.  Osborne carded eleven pars on the round, going out in 40 and in with 42.  Dennis Reiner Jr. finished with forth place honors and round of 83.  Reiner Jr. carded nine pars on the day, going out in 45 and in with 38.  Katy Kile finished with fifth place honors and round of 85.  Kile carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-3 4th hole, going out in 44 and in with 41.


Palmer Flight:  Art Flores (81), Milton Kirkwood (82), Harold Jackson (85/40), Cedric Smith (85/41), Randy Hodges (86).

Art Flores captured his second victory of the season and is now one win away from Nationals qualifying.  Flores round of 82 was good enough for a one-stroke victory and included ten pars, going out in 42 and in with 39.  Milton Kirkwood finished one stroke back with a round of 82 and claimed runner up honors.  Kirkwood carded five pars and birdies at holes 10, 11, and 15, going out in 45 and with one-over par 37.  Harold Jackson finished with third place honors and round of 85/40.  Jackson carded four pars and birdies at holes 8, 13, 15, and 16, going out in 45 and in with 40.  Cedric Smith finished with forth place honors and round of 85/41.  Smith carded seven pars and birdies at holes 2 and 16, going out in 44 and in with 41.  Randy Hodges, reining Sr. Hogan National Champion, finished with fifth place honors and round of 86.  Hodges carded eight pars on the day, going out in 46 and in with 40.



Hogan Flight:  Chris Stavinoha (87), Roger Masek (87), Jeff Stahlhut (88), Tom Dyer (89), Mike Rayburn (90).

“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Hogan Flight at GCAmTour-Houston event, Walden on Lake Conroe.  Chris Stavinoha and Roger Masek both carded rounds of 87 in regulation play.  The playoff began on the 1st hole and Stavinoha carded par-4 for the victory over Masek.  In regulation play Stavinoha carded four pars and birdie at the par-3 6th hole, going out in 42 and in with 45.  Masek carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-5 10th hole, going out in 39 and in with 48.  Jeff Stahlhut finished with third place honors and round of 88.  Stahlhut carded three pars and birdies at holes 3 and 17, going out in 42 and in with 46.  Tom Dyer finished with forth place honors and round of 89.  Dyer carded seven pars on the day, going out in 40 and in with 49.  Mike Rayburn finished with fifth place honors and round of 90.  Rayburn carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 16th hole, going out in 42 and in with 48.



Senior Hogan Flight:  Christopher Phillips (80), George Smith (82/40/24), Daryl Epperson (82/40/27), Ernie Dyer (85/40), Chris Neelley (85/42).

Christopher Phillips captured his third win of the season and in doing so has qualified for Nationals.  Phillips victory round of 80 was good enough for a two-stroke clear win in the tightly contested Sr. Hogan Flight.  Phillips carded eight pars and birdies at holes 9 and 10, going out in 39 and in with 41.  George Smith finished with runner up honors and round of 82/40/24, just two strokes back.  Smith carded eight pars and birdies at holes 12 and 16, going out in 42 and in with 40.  Daryl Epperson finished with third place honors and round of 82/40/27, carding six pars and birdies at holes 12 and 16, going out in 42 and in with 40. Ernie Dyer finished with forth place honors and round of 85/40.  Dyer carded eight pars on the round, going out in 45 and in with 40.  Chris Neelley finished with fifth place honors and round of 85/42.  Neelley carded six pars on the day, going out in 43 and in with 42.



Sarazen Flight:  Kyle Young (81), Scott Thompson (86), Rick Smalley (88), Gary Gum (91), Kendall Hisey (95).

Kyle Young captured his forth victory of the 2014 season by matching his low tournament round of the year, 81.  Young’s round of 81 was five strokes clear of the field and included seven pars and birdies at holes 5 and 9, going out in two-over par 38 and in with 43.  Scott Thompson made the trip over from the Hill Country Tour worthwhile and finished with runner up honors and round of 86.  Thompson carded seven pars and a birdie at the par-4 3rd hole, going out in 42 and in with 44.  Rick Smalley finished with third place honors and round of 88.  Smalley carded eight pars and a birdie at the par-3 4th hole, closest to pin winner.  Smalley went out in 42 and in with 46.  Gary Gum finished with forth place honors and round of 91.  Gum carded four pars and a birdie at the par-4 15th hole, going out in 48 and in with 43.  Kendall Hisey finished with fifth place honors and round of 95.  Hisey carded four pars and a birdie at the par-5 9th hole, going out in 47 and in with 48.  


Senior Sarazen Flight:  John Scott (83), Craig Duncan (83), L.P. Jones (87), Marty Hodges (90), Keith Gannon (94).

“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Sarazen Flight at GCAmTour-Houston event, Walden on Lake Conroe.  John Scott, reining Sr. Jones National Champion, and Craig Duncan both carded rounds of 83 in regulation play.  On the first playoff hole it was Scott carding a bogey-5 for the victory, his third of the year.  In regulation play Scott carded seven pars and a birdie at the signature par-5 11th hole, going out in 42 and in with 41.  Duncan carded nine pars and birdies at holes 12 and 13, going out in one-over par 37 but faded coming in with 46.  L.P. Jones finished with third place honors and round of 87.  Jones carded nine pars on the day, going out in 45 and in with 42.  Marty Hodges finished with forth place honors and round of 90, carding five pars and a birdie at the par-4 15th hole, going out in 47 and in with 43.  Keith Gannon finished with fifth place honors and round of 94.  Gannon carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 16th hole, going out in 52 and in with 42.


Jones Flight:  Rick Halprin (89), David Sipe (90/47), Blake Barnes (90/50), Denis Villere (94), Ray Bednar (95).

Rick Halprin captured his first victory of the 2014 season in the tightly contest Jones Flight by one stroke over the field and round of 89.  Halprin carded five pars and a birdie at the par-4 13th hole, going out in 44 and in with 45.  David Sipe finished with runner up honors and round of 90/47.  Sipe carded seven pars on the day going out in 43 and in with 47.  Blake Barnes finished with third place honors and round of 90/50.  Barnes carded five pars and a birdie at the par-5 9th hole, going out in 40 and in with 50.  Denis Villere finished with forth place honors and round of 94.  Villere carded four pars and a birdie at the difficult par-5 11th signature hole.  Villere went out in 49 and in with 45.  Ray Bednar finished with fifth place honors and round of 95.  Bednar carded one par on the day, going out in 48 and in with 47.


Snead Flight:  Alan Brumley (95), Bryce Kocian (105), Stephen Sater (107), Rick Hagel (110/56/36), Tom Eysenbach (110/56/39).

Alan Brumley, former Walden on Lake Conroe Champion, captured his first victory of the 2014 season with an impressive ten-stroke clear round of 95.  Brumley carded three pars on the day going out in 46 and with 49.  Bryce Kocian finished with runner up honors and round of 105.  Kocian carded two pars on the round, going out in 53 and in with 52.  Stephen Sater finished with third place honors and round of 107.  Sater carded one pars on the day, going out in 53 and in with 54.  Rick Hagel finished with forth place honors and round of 110/56/36.  Hagel carded two pars on the day, going out in 54 and in with 56.  Tom Eysenbach finished with fifth place honors and round of 110/56/39.  Eysenbach carded two pars on the day, going out in 54 and in with 56.
