Katy Classic - The Golf Club of Cinco Ranch

Scott R Chilcutt, Katy, TX (March 19, 2017) The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch, historically a staple on the Houston Fall schedule, made it's way to the spring and it didn't disappoint.  Nice conditions, great weather, and low scores all made it into contributing factors at The Katy Classic.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $430, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $4,130 in contributions to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Hogan Flight:  First-year player, Kyle Standley of Cypress, TX, racked up another win, his second in as many attempts. Standley, with a birdie on the par 4- 8th, finished four strokes clear of Kyle Young of Bellaire, TX.  Lumberton, TX, member David Evans, with two birdies on his day, rounded out the top three, two strokes back of Young.

Sarazen Flight:  Brandon Schielack of La Grange, TX, birdied two of his last four holes, en route to his first win on tour.  Schielack, finished two strokes clear of Montgomery, TX, member Joe Michetti, for his third runner-up finish of the points year. Playing in his first event of the points season, Massimo Passini, of Houston, TX, rounded out the top three.

Senior Sarazen Flight  Houston, TX, resident, David Sipe, shot a career-low round +7 - 78 for his tenth win on tour and second of the season.  Second-time player, Andrew Sigur of Port Arthur, TX, made the best of a birdie on the par 3 - 12th, for the runner-up finish, six strokes back.  Larry Viktorin of Wharton, TX, and Pearland, TX, player Michael Bell, split the third place finish.

Back to Cypress Lakes on the Houston Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Cypress, TX (March 4, 2017)  Cypress Lakes Golf Club, normally on the Houston Tour schedule in the fall, made a spring showing due to scheduling conflicts, this weekend.  With very gloomy weather forecasts all week, the event went off with only a few showers falling on some of the later tee times.  Fast greens along with hard blooming Bermuda fairways led to some low and HIGH scores.

The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $500, bringing the Texas Tour local events total to $2,960 in contributions to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Conroe, TX, first-time player DJ Jones, made a birdie on the par 4 - 6th en route to the Flight Championship.  Four strokes back, another first timer, Thomas Ewing of Houston grabbed the runner-up finish, with 2015 Senior National Champion, David Ortego of The Woodlands, TX, rounding out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Promoted to the Palmer Flight after the 2016 National Championship, Al Campo of Deer Park, TX, continues to roll along with the new found fame.  Runner-up his first time out at the Redstone Classic, Campo birdied consecutive holes on the front nine, to pick up his fifth win on tour and first as a Palmer.  Three strokes back, Magnolia, TX, member Steven Ruonavaara equaled his best finish on tour finishing second.  Two strokes back the pair of Michael Glover of Nederland, TX, and Magnolia, TX, player Jeff Zemencsik shared the third place honors.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Palm Springs Tour member, Pete Murphy of Murrieta, CA, recorded an eagle on the par 5 - 8th going out with a +1 - 37 on his front nine.  Murphy opened the door to Houston Tour second time player, Tim McWilliams coming to the clubhouse setting up a sudden death playoff.  McWilliams was able to get the best of Murphy in the overtime, to pick up his first win on tour.  Two strokes back, Brad Bailey of nearby Cypress, TX, and Pasadena, TX, resident Bo Kirkwood, with three consecutive birdies on the back, split the show place finish.

Hogan Flight:  Local course knowledge continued, with Cypress, TX, member Kyle Standley, picking up his first win on tour in two attempts.  Standley, with two birdies on the round, finished three strokes ahead of Brian Frazier of Kingwood, TX, with a pair birdies of his own.  Kyle Young of Bellaire, TX, tied up Houston, TX, player Rick Houchins, for another tied up third place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Daryl Epperson of Houston, TX, equaled his low career round on tour when he picked up the win at Cypress Lakes in 2010 and became a fourteen-time winner on tour.  Five strokes back, Wharton, TX, player Jimmie Chambers, put together three birdies on the day for the runner-up finish.  Chris Neelley, of Spring, TX, recorded his best finish since a promotion to Senior Hogan rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Katy, TX, member Adam Bray, only out of the top three once at Cypress Lakes, finally picked up the Championship for his sixth victory on tour.  Four strokes back, traveling Hill Country Tour player, Tim Porter of Georgetown, TX carded his best finish in four attempts on tour, with a four-time winner of the season, Mark Tylenda of Dallas, TX, rounding out the top three.
Senior Sarazen Flight:  LP Jones of Houston, TX, has been close with twelve top three finishes on tour but has never made it to victory lane.  Making the trip to Puerto Rico just two weeks prior for the Puerto Rico Amateur,  Jones had to cut his stay short with a family emergency that has consumed all his time since.  Time away from the game seemed to make all the difference as LP birdied his final hole of the day for a fitting, first-time Championship.  ST Louis Tour traveler, Bill Braun of Redbud, IL, shared the runner-up finish, with first-time player Andrew Sigur of Port Arthur, TX.

Jones Flight:  With a birdie on his first hole of the day, Houston, TX, resident,  Benjamin Lipson became a two-time winner on tour in a big way.  Lipson finished six strokes clear of the pair of Mike Schultz of Port Arthur, TX, and Wharton, TX, member Olan Benge, sharing the second place finish.

Snead Flight:  Long Island, NY, native Robert Vespa, now residing in Pasadena, TX, picked up his third win on tour and first since his Major Championship victory at the Red River Shootout in March of 2015.  Vespa, made par on his last two holes of the round to edge out Houston, TX, player Javier Quintero for the win.  Quintero, with two birdies on the day, stayed four strokes clear of Gene Hanley of San Antonio, TX taking home the third place finish.
