GCAmTour-Houston, River Ridge Tournament, March 17, 2012

Spring comes early at River Ridge with a beautiful day for golf and temperatures in the low 80’s.  Sudden Death playoffs determine the winners in the Senior Palmer and Senior Hogan flights.

The Course:  River Ridge GC, Sealy, TX.  The course was in spring conditions, ready to make it’s transition to warmer weather.  The greens were smooth and medium-fast, running between 9-10.

The Weather:  A beautiful day with sunshine and mixed clouds.  Temperatures were in the low-mid 70’s early in the morning and warmed up rapidly to the low 80’s.  The winds were out of the SSE between 8-15mph. 

The Tournament: 

Championship Flight:  Top 5:  Lynn Cormier (74), Adam Kuzinski (77), Jack Marshall (78), Rich Vigil (81/42), Taylor Adams (81/46).      
Lynn Cormier captured his second victory of the season by matching his low round of the year with a 3-over 74.  Cormier carded eleven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12, three strokes clear.  Adam Kuzinski mad his tour debut with a runner-up finish and round of 77.  Kuzinski carded nine pars, birdies at holes 9 and 17, and an EAGLE-3 at the first hole.  Jack Marshall made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 78.  Marshall carded seven pars and birdies at holes 2, 8, and 12.  Rich Vigil finished fourth place with a round of 81/42, including ten pars.  Taylor Adams made his tour debut with a 5th place finish and round of 81/46, including six pars and birdies at holes 1, 5, and 13.


Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Martin Nealey (75), Travis Nichols (78/41), Frank Wallace (78/42), Tino Flores (80), Derek Loebbecke (81).       
Martin Nealey captured his first victory of the 2012 season three strokes clear of the field with a round of 75.  Nealey was steady on his round, carding ten pars and birdies at holes 1 and 10.  Travis Nichols finished runner-up for the second consecutive time, carding a round of 78/41.  Nichols round included eleven pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.  Frank Wallace finished with third place honors and round of 78/42.  Wallace carded eleven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Tino Flores finished fourth place with a round of 80, including eight pars and a birdie at the 1st hole.  Derek Loebbecke finished fifth place with a round of 81, carding eight pars.  


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Jeff Whitzel (76), Robert Corbello (76), Jan Peebles (76), Tom Crea (77/39), David Anthony (77/42).        
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Palmer Flight at River Ridge Golf Club, Sealy, TX.  At the end of regulation play we had three golfers in the clubhouse with rounds of 76.  On the first playoff hole Whitzel and Corbello made par to advance and Peebles was eliminated.  On the second playoff hole it was Whitzel making par for the victory, Corbello finished runner up.  In regulation play, Whitzel’s round of 76 included twelve pars and a birdie at the first hole.  Corbello’s round included eleven pars and birdies at holes 1 and 2.  Peebles round included thirteen pars.  Tom Crea finished with fourth place honors and round of 77/39, including nine pars and birdies at holes 6 and 11.  David Anthony finished fifth place with a round of 77/42, including seven pars and birdies at holes 1, 3, 4, and 10.


Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  James Temple (77), Roger Masek (81/40), Jacques Bessiere (81/41), Leslie Henry (83), Jeff Stahlhut (84). 
James Temple made his tour debut with a victory in the Hogan Flight and round of 77; four strokes clear of the field.  Temple was steady on his round, carding ten pars and a birdie at the 5th hole.  After finishing runner-up at the Horseshoe Bay major, Roger Masek finished runner-up at River Ridge with a round of 81/40.  Masek carded nine pars on the round.  Jacques Bessiere finished with third place honors and round of 81/41, carding ten pars and a birdie at the ninth hole.  Leslie Henry finished with fourth place honors and round of 83.  Henry carded seven pars and a birdie at the 15th hole.  Jeff Stahlhut finished just one stroke back for fifth place honors and round of 84.  Stahlhut carded seven pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.


Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Dusty Rhodes (77), Randy Kiziah (77), Steve Barnett (79), Michael Castaneda (82/41), George Smith (82/43).
“Sudden Death” Playoff determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at River Ridge Golf Club, Sealy, TX.  Two golfer carded rounds of 77 at the end of regulation play so they took it back to the first hole for the playoff.  It was a par on the first hole for Dusty Rhodes, capturing his second victory of the season.  Rhodes carded ten pars and birdies at holes 1 and 10 in regulation play.  Kiziah carded six pars and birdies at holes 4, 6, 12, and 17 for the runner-up finish.  Steve Barnett made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 79.  Barnett carded eight pars and a birdie at the 1st hole.  Michael Castaneda finished with fourth place honors and round of 82/41, including five pars and birdies at holes 6 and 16.  George Smith finished fifth place with a round of 82/43, including four pars and birdies at holes 1 and 12.


Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Matt Purgahn (82), Gary Gum (85), Robert Murphy (86/42), Thomas Kobayashi (86/43), Giancarlo Mangiafico (87/45).
Matt Purgahn captured his first victory of the season three strokes clear of the field with a round of 82.  Purgahn carded six pars and birdies at holes 2, 8, and 16.  Gary Gum finished runner-up with a round of 85.  Gum carded eight pars on his round.  Robert Murphy finished with third place honors and round of 86/42, including six pars.  Thomas Kobayashi finished fourth place with a round of 86/43, carding seven pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.  Giancarlo Mangiafico finished with fifth place honors and round of 87/45, including six pars.


Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Larry Viktorin (82), Mark Kirby (83), Mark Maddox (84), Jay Crawford (85), Bruce Beakley (86). 
Larry Viktorin captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the filed with a round of 82.  Viktorin carded seven pars and a birdie at the 15th hole on his way to the victory.  Mark Kirby finished runner-up coming off his Major victory at Horseshoe Bay.  Kirby carded ten pars on his round of 83.  Mark Maddox finished with third place honors and round of 84.  Maddox carded eight pars on the round.  Jay Crawford finished one stroke back for fourth place honors and round of 85, including seven pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.  Bruce Beakley finished fifth place with a round of 86, carding five pars and a birdie at the 10th hole. 


Jones Flight:  Top 5:  James Sheppeard (86), James Price (92), Brock Mayberry (93), Rich Kelley (94), David Green (95).   
James Sheppeard captured his second victory of the season and continued his push for a Sarazen Flight promotion.  Sheppeard’s victory and round of 86 was six strokes clear of the field, including seven pars.  James Price finished runner-up in his second consecutive start, this time with a round of 92, including four pars.  Brock Mayberry made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 93, carding four pars and a birdie at the 13th hole.  Rich Kelley followed his victory at the Horseshoe Bay Major with a fourth place finish at River Ridge.   Kelley’s round of 94 included five pars.  David Green made his tour debut with a fifth place finish and round of 95, carding four pars on his round.


 Senior Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Mark Dion (81), Randy Adcock (86), David George (87), Rick Halprin (90), Neil MacDonald (93).   
Mark Dion returned to tour play and captured his first ever tour victory and career tournament round low of 81.  Dion’s amazing round included eleven pars!  Randy Adcock followed his major victory at Horseshoe Bay with a runner-up finish at River Ridge.  David George made his tour debut with a third place finish and round of 87.  George carded six pars and a birdie at the 12th hole.  Rick Halprin finished with fourth place honors and round of 90, carding five pars on the day.  Neil MacDonald followed his victory at Moody Gardens with a fifth place finish at River Ridge.  MacDonald carded three pars and a birdie at the 15th hole.


Snead Flight:  Patrick Richardson (91), Richard Schram (96), Jeff Garcia (99), Javier Quintero (100), Alan Patterson (102).
Patrick Richardson captured his first victory of the season five strokes clear of the field with a round of 91.  Richardson’s victory round included six pars.  Richard Schram had his best showing of the season with a runner-up finish and round of 96.  Schram carded four pars and a birdie at the 8th hole.  Jeff Garcia finished with third place honors and round of 99, carding four pars on the day.  Javier Quintero finished fourth place with a round of 100, including four pars.  Alan Patterson finished with fifth place honors and round of 102, carding 2 pars. 


Senior Snead Flight:  Tom Eysenbach (94), Cathay McGee (95/46), Jim Lamberth (95/49), Ron Nelms (97), Marcy Glidden (99).
Tom Eysenbach captured his first victory of the season by one stroke over the field with a round of 94.  Eysenbach carded four pars on his way to the victory.  Cathay McGee followed her victory at Comanche Trace with a runner-up finish at River Ridge and round of 95/46.  McGee carded two pars on her round.  Jim Lamberth finished with third place honors and round of 95/49.  Lamberth carded two pars on the round.  Ron Nelms made his tour debut with a fourth place finish and round of 97.  Nelms carded three pars on his round.  Marcy Glidden finished with fifth place honors and round of 99, including two pars.
