GCAmTour-Houston, Walden on Lake Conroe Tournament Recap

“Sudden Death” playoffs determine the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at Walden on Lake Conroe, Montgomery, TX. 


The Course:  Walden on Lake Conroe, Montgomery, TX.  The course was in excellent condition, beautiful fairways, rough, and native areas.  The putting surfaces were smooth and medium-fast, likely between 9-10.     

The Weather:  A beautiful day for golf with a mix of sunshine, clouds, and blue sky.  Temperatures were in the low 80’s early in the morning and warmed up rapidly to the high 90’s.  The winds were from the S throughout the day, 5-8mph. 

The Tournament: 

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Ryan Lyons (78), Tino Flores (87), Cedrick Smith (88), Frank Wallace (88), Kevin Duke (90).      
Ryan Lyons captured his first tour victory, running away from the field with a nine-stroke victory and round of 78.  Lyons was steady on his round and carded ten pars and birdies at holes 2 and 12.  Tino Flores made his best finish of the year, runner up with a round of 87 on the difficult Walden course.  Flores carded seven pars on the day.  Cedrick Smith finished third place with a round of 88/39.  Smith carded five pars and birdies at holes 3, 10, and 11.  Frank Wallace carded a round of 88/43 for fourth place honors.  Wallace carded six pars and a birdie on the signature 11th hole.  Kevin Duke was hoping to have a little “home cooking” but came up short with a round of 90.  Duke managed to card five pars and a birdie at the 17th hole.


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Rich Vigil (78), Lynn Cormier (82), Robert Corbello (84), Allan Collier (86), Jeff Whitzel (86). 
Rich Vigil made his tour debut in style, winning the tournament by four strokes over the field and round of 78.  Vigil was solid, carding eight pars and birdies at holes 1, 10, and 18.  Lynn Cormier finished runner up with a round of 82, carding eight pars and birdies at holes 12 and 13, 1-under 35 on the back nine.  Robert Corbello finished with third place honors and round of 84.  Corbello managed to card nine pars on his round.  Allan Collier finished fourth place with a round of 86/42, carding four pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Jeff Whitzel finished fifth place with a round of 86/43.  Whitzel carded seven pars on the round.


Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Jeff Stahlhut (79), Justin Merendino (85), Jacques Bessiere (86), Graeme Cole (90), George Smith (95). 
 Jeff Stahlhut captured his second victory on the season, firing a round of 79 and six strokes clear of the field.  Stahlhut managed to keep the big numbers off the card, no double-bogies, nine pars, and a birdie at the 2nd hole.  Justin Merendino finished runner up with a round of 85.  Merendino carded eight pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  Jacques Bessiere finished with third place honors and round of 86.  Bessiere carded seven pars and a birdie on the signature hole, 11.  Graeme Cole, winner of this event in 2010, struggled to repeat as he carded a round of 90.  Cole carded five pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  George Smith finished fifth place with a round of 95.  Smith, playing well as of late, struggled to find his swing and carded three pars on the day.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Daryl Epperson (84), Bill Mathews (84), Randy Hodges (86), Michael Walker (86), Randy Kiziah (87). 
“Sudden Death” playoff determines the winner of the Senior Hogan Flight at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club, Montgomery, TX.  Daryl Epperson and Bill Mathews went to the 10th hole to determine the victor after carding identical rounds of 84.  On the first playoff hole it was Epperson making a birdie on the par-5 from about 20 feet to claim the victory.  Epperson carded seven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole for his first victory of the season.  Mathews carded seven pars during regulation play.  Randy Hodges finished with third place honors and round of 86/41.  Hodges carded seven pars on his round.  Michael Walker finished with fourth place honors and round of 86/46, including eight pars and a birdie at the difficult par-4 8th hole.  Randy Kiziah finished with fifth place honors and round of 87, including seven pars and a birdie at the 18th hole.

Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Roger Masek (85), Matt Purgahn (87), Jason Hollis (92), Jeff Greenwood (97), Gus Aldana (97).
Roger Masek captured his third tournament victory in a row, this time with a round of 85.  Masek is making a strong bid for a promotion to the Hogan Flight and we will see on our next handicap revision on 8/2.  Masek carded four pars and birdies at holes 3, 8, and 10.  Matt Purgahn had his chances but came up just short with a round of 87 for second place honors.  Purgahn carded seven pars, a birdie at the 5th hole, and an EAGLE-2 at the 8th hole from around 75yds.  Jason Hollis finished third place with a round of 92, carding six pars on the day.  Jeff Greenwood finished fourth place with a round of 97/46, carding two pars on the round.  Gus Aldana finished fifth place with a round of 97/50.  Aldana carded four pars on the day.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Lanh Nguyen (85), Bruce Legrand (89), Mark Kirby (95), JT Collins (98), Marty Hodges (102).
Lanh Nguyen captured his first tour victory four strokes clear of the field with a round of 85.  Nguyen was steady, carding six pars and a birdie at the 5th hole.  Bruce Legrand finished runner up with a round of 89.  Legrand carded four pars and a birdie at the 14th hole.  Mark Kirby finished with third place honors and round of 95.  Kirby managed four pars and a birdie at the 10th hole.  JT Collins finished with fourth place honors and round of 98, including four pars.  Marty Hodges finished fifth place with a round of 102.  Hodges struggled to find his swing and got into trouble on several holes, carding four pars on the round.

Jones Flight:  Top 5:  James Sheppeard (86), Troy Massey (89), William Senne (91), Lu Cormier (92), Rich Kelley (96).   
James Sheppeard has been working hard on his game and it’s starting to pay off.  Sheppeard fired his lowest tournament round of the season, 86, to win by three strokes over the field.  Sheppeard carded eight pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Troy Massey finished three strokes back with a round of 89, and finished runner up.  Massey carded six pars on the day.  William Senne finished with third place honors and round of 91.  Senne carded four pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.  Lu Cormier finished fourth place with a round of 92, just one stroke back.  Cormier carded six pars on the round.  Rich Kelley finished fifth place with a round of 96, including four pars.

Senior Snead Flight:  Tom Eysenbach (96), Marcy Glidden (99), Rick Hagel (100), Steve Wyatt (102). 
It’s been a long time coming but the wait is OVER!  Tom Eysenbach captured his first tour victory.  Eysenbach fired his second lowest tournament round of the season with a 96 to win by three strokes over the field.  Eysenbach carded three pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Marcy Glidden finished runner up with a round of 99.  Glidden carded three pars on the round and made a charge on the back nine but came up just short with birdies on holes 10 and 16.  Rick Hagel finished third place with a round of 100, including four pars.  Steve Wyatt finished fourth place with a round of 102.  Wyatt managed five pars on the day.

GCAmTour-Houston, Woodforest Tournament Results, July 9, 2011

“Sudden Death” playoffs determine the winners of the Senior Palmer and Senior Sarazen Flights at Woodforest Golf Club, Montgomery, TX. 


The Course:  Woodforest Golf Club at Fish Creek, Montgomery, TX.  The course was in excellent condition, beautiful fairways, rough, and native areas.  The putting surfaces were smooth and fast, posted at the clubhouse at 12.0.     

The Weather:  A beautiful day for golf with a mix of sunshine, clouds, rain and blue sky.  Temperatures were in the high 70’s early in the morning and warmed up rapidly to the high 90’s.  The winds were from the S throughout the day, 5-8mph.  The conditions were good for scoring and the players took advantage of it.

The Tournament: 

Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Frank Wallace (77), Kevin Turner (80), Tino Flores (81), Jim Lam (81), Dave Davlin (82).      
Frank Wallace won his sixth event of the season and goes back-to-back-to-back-to-back on the Houston Tour for four in a row.  Wallace rolled the ball well on the fast greens carding eleven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Kevin Turner finished runner up for the second consecutive event, posting a round of 80.  Turner had his chances, carding nine pars, and birdies at holes 3 and 6.  Turner couldn’t avoid the big numbers at holes 5, 12, and 15.  Tino Flores finished third place carding a round of 81/42.  Flores managed to card ten pars and birdies at holes 7 and 16.  Jim Lam finished fourth place with a round of 81/43, carding eight pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Dave Davlin made the trip over from the SAA Tour and finished fifth place.  Davlin carded nine pars and a birdie at the 13th hole. 


Senior Palmer Flight:  Top 5:  Tom Crea (72), Lynn Cormier (72), David Anthony (77), Walter Menuet (78), Allan Collier (78). 
“Sudden Death” playoff determines the winner of the Senior Palmer Flight at Woodforest Golf Club, Montgomery, TX.  Tom Crea captured his first victory on tour in dramatic fashion, winning a two-hole playoff.  Crea fired his lowest tournament round of even par 72, including ten pars and birdies at holes 5, 8, 11, and 18.  Lynn Cormier also carded an outstanding round of even par 72, including fourteen pars and birdies at holes 2 and 16.  Both tied the first playoff hole and Crea won it with a par on the second playoff hole.  David Anthony finished third place with a round of 77.  Anthony carded twelve pars and a birdie at the 15th hole.  Walter Menuet finished fourth place with a round of 78/41, including eight pars and birdies at holes 3 and 6.  Allan Collier finished fifth place with a round of 78/42, including eleven pars and a birdie at the 4th hole.


Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Shawn Didear (77), George Smith (82), Jeff Stahlhut (83), Graeme Cole (84), Jacques Bessiere (85).
It’s been awhile since Shawn Didear has tasted victory, dating back to his last win in October of 2010.  He successfully defended his title at Woodforest with an outstanding round of 77.  Didear carded twelve pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  George Smith continues to play well and finished runner up with a round of 82.  Smith carded seven pars and birdies at holes 14 and 16.  Jeff Stahlhut finished just one stroke back for third place honors with a round of 83.  Stahlhut carded eleven pars.  Graeme Cole finished one stroke back with a round of 84, for fourth place honors.  Cole carded five pars and birdies at holes 6 and 9.  Jacques Bessiere finished fifth place with a round of 85, including six pars and birdies at holes 3 and 15. 

Senior Hogan Flight:  Top 5:  Jim Mass (75), Randy Hodges (77), Vernon Wells (79), Michael Walker (81), Craig Duncan (83). 
Jim Mass captured his second victory of the season with an outstanding round of 75; two strokes clear of the field.  Mass carded nine pars and birdies on holes 3, 15, and 18.  Randy Hodges continues to play well and finished runner up with a round of 77.  Hodges carded twelve pars and birdies on holes 5 and 6.  Vernon Wells finished third place with a round of 79, including twelve pars and a birdie on the 9th hole (1-under 35 on the front nine).  Michael Walker finished fourth place with a round of 81.  Walker carded nine pars and a birdie at the 6th hole.  Craig Duncan finished fifth place with a round of 83/43.  Duncan carded seven pars and birdies at holes 2 and 8. 

Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Roger Masek (79), Greg Stubblefield (85), Gus Aldana (87), Rick Smalley (88), Giancarlo Mangiafico (91). 
Roger Masek captured his second victory of the season, this time with a round of 79.  Masek was steady, carding eleven pars and a birdie at the 3rd hole.  Greg Stubblefield finished runner up for the second consecutive tournament, carding a round of 85.  Stubblefield carded ten pars and an EAGLE-3 at the par-5 6th hole.  Gus Aldana finished with third place honors, carding a round of 87.  Aldana had seven pars and a birdie at the 9th hole.  Rick Smalley finished just one stroke back with a round of 88.  Smalley carded seven pars on the round.  Giancarlo Mangiafico finished fifth place with a round of 91.  Mangiafico carded eight pars and a birdie at the 2nd hole. 

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Top 5:  Randy Adcock (83), Mike Murphy (83), Mark Kirby (85), Marty Hodges (86), Jim Craig (88). 
“Sudden Death” playoff determines the winner of the Senior Sarazen Flight at Woodforest Golf Club, Montgomery, TX.  Randy Adcock (reining Senior Jones National Champion) captured his first victory in the Senior Sarazen Flight with a round of 83.  Adcock putt the ball from about ten feet off the green and made birdie on the first playoff hole.  Adcock had seven pars and birdies on holes 13 and 14 during regulation play.  Mike Murphy was the other player in the playoff, also carding a round of 83 to get in.  Murphy couldn’t match the birdie on the first playoff and finished runner up.  Murphy carded six pars and birdies on holes 3, 5, and 6 during regulation play.  Mark Kirby finished third place with a round of 85, including eight pars and a birdie at the 16th hole.  Marty Hodges finished fourth place with a round of 86, carding seven pars on the day.  Jim Craig finished with fifth place honors and round of 88, including eight pars. 

Jones Flight:  Top 5:  Lee Isham (87), Hal Wychopen (88), Rich Kelley (90), Lu Cormier (92), Gary Gum (93).   
Lee Isham finally broke through and captured his first tour victory in the tightly contested Jones Flight, by one stroke.  Isham’s round of 87 included five pars and a birdie at the 16th hole.  Hal Wychopen returned to tour play and captured second place honors with a round of 88.  Wychopen carded four pars and birdies on holes 6 and 13.  Rich Kelley finished with third place honors and round of 90.  Kelley carded five pars on the round.  Lu Cormier is adjusting to the Jones flight and finished fourth place.  Cormier’s round of 92 included five pars.  Gary Gum finished fifth place with a round of 93.  Gum had five pars on the round. 

Snead Flight:  Patrick Richardson (87), Robert Viator (91), Mike Innes (93), Marcy Glidden (98), Tom Eysenbach (101).   
Patrick Richardson captured his third victory of the season, matching his lowest tournament round score of 87.  Richardson carded seven pars on the round.  Robert Viator finished runner up for the second consecutive tournament, carding a round of 91.  Viator made five pars on his round.  Mike Innes finished with third place honors and round of 93.  Innes carded four pars on the round.  Marcy Glidden finished with fourth place honors and round of 98.  Glidden had five pars on the round.  Tom Eysenbach finished fifth place with a round of 101.  Eysenbach carded two pars on the round.
