Tour 18 - Fall Challenge in Humble

Scott R Chilcutt, Humble, TX (October 23, 2016)  Tour 18 Houston, situated in Humble, TX, replicates a collection of some of the greatest golf holes in the country.  For most of us, the chance to play holes at AugustaColonial, and Pebble Beach are merely a dream, so opening the Golf Channel AM Tour Houston 2017 points season seemed appropriate to start the dreaming.  Like the 2015 event the par 5 - 2nd, designed like the #6 hole at BayHill, where the Arnold Palmer Invitational is played was the hardest on the course.  The par 5 had 12 pars or better with 31 above double bogey for an average 7.16 strokes.  Crazy, 17th hole at Sawgrass, the ninth on Tour 18, played the easiest at an average 3.72.

Rick Halprin (Senior Jones Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge."   Winning his own flight playing a Srixon ball, Rick will get a dozen sent to him for the win. Ross Gonzales picked up the Tournament Champion, presented by Carlisle's Engraving with a -2 - 70. The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $460, bringing the year to date total from the Texas Tour local events to $14,510 contributed to the Foundation in 2016.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Cypress, TX, member Marc Duncan started the round on the rough side, including one of the normal scores on the par 5 - 2nd hole, but got things back in order to finish his last twelve holes in +1.  Narrowly outpacing a pair of players one stroke back, Duncan picked up his third win on tour and first on Texas soil.  Matthew Winters of The Woodlands, TX, and League City, TX, player Blake Wilson, with four birdies on the day, shared the runner-up honors.

Palmer Flight:  Embracing his Srixon Journey to Better promotion after the Tour Championship, Mike Karlin, of Houston, TX, stepped back a tee, birdied the final hole on both nines and picked up his first win as a Palmer, and third on tour.  Sugar Land, TX, member Roger Masek, finished just two strokes out of the lead for the second place finish, with Brian Jordan of Houston, TX, rounding out the top three with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 10th.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Starting on the tenth hole, Orange, TX, player Ernie Dyer, built a comfortable lead on his front nine, that would turn out to be only a single stroke when the day ended.  Leslie Henry of Houston, TX, played her final nine in +2 with the help of a birdie on the par 3 - 6th to close in on that lead.  For Dyer, it was his seventh win on tour, one coming at the Senior National Championship (2014).  Henry played her way into the runner-up finish, wedged between another Senior National Champion (2015), Tim Koslowski of Humble, TX, who carded birdie on his final hole of the day to safely claim the third place honors.

Hogan Flight:  Coming off a runner-up finish at the 2016 National Championship at Innisbrook, and subsequent Srixon Journey to Better Promotion, Ross Gonzales of Hockley, TX, became another first-time flight winner, in as many attempts. Gonzales, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, ensured a two-stroke victory, his fifth on tour.  Benny Silva of Friendswood, TX, carded his best finish on tour edging out the pair of Will Whitley of Cypress, TX, and Bellaire, TX, player Kyle Young, knotted in the third place finish.

Sarazen Flight:  Katy, TX, resident, Adam Bray, picked up his fifth win on tour.  Bray, down four strokes after the front nine, held it steady on the back, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 16th, made up the deficit, to win by two strokes.  Sharing the runner-up honors, Judson Severson of College Station, TX, and DFW Tour player, Wadsworth Jarrell of Fort Worth, TX, finished in the second place spot.

Senior Sarazen Flight:   Chris Neelley of Spring, TX, continued his winning ways, with a three-stroke victory, adding to a total seven wins on the 2016 points season.  Richmond, TX, player Marty Hodges, with a win in August at the Friendswood Challenge, took home the runner-up honors with Glenn Aldredge of Orange, TX, rounding out the top three.

Jones Flight:  Fresh off a wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii, much of which was spent on an Arnold Palmer Course, Larry Atchley of Kyle, TX, landed back on Texas soil for his fifth win on tour. Starting on the tenth hole on the day, Atchley put together a comfortable lead on the front, that quickly dwindled when Corpus Christi, TX, player William Speck took a four-stroke bite out of the lead on the back nine to finish in the runner-up spot.  Richard Lagrone of Spring, TX, rounded out the top three, just three strokes out of the winning spot.

Senior Jones Flight:  Jumping back and forth from the Senior Sarazen Flight, Rick Halprin of Houston, TX, made birdie on the par 4 - 3rd and almost moved back up with a five-stroke victory.  Huntsville, TX, player Neil MacDonald, matching the birdie on the 3rd, finished in the runner-up spot with,  John Pickens of Montgomery, TX, rounding out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Sealy, TX, resident Mark Boles, made it eight wins on tour, but it took some help from the field.  Starting on the tenth hole on the day, Boles had a three-stroke advantage going to the back nine, faltered a bit on the back, but ended the day with a one-stroke advantage over Javier Quintero of Houston, TX.  Visiting Hill Country Tour member, Mark Colwell of  Selma, TX, took home the show place finish.

Tour Champions - Houston Tour

Scott R Chilcutt, Edmond, OK (September 7, 2016)  Bringing a close to the year, setting up for National and Senior National Championship bids later this month, marks another chapter with the Golf Channel AM Tour on the Houston Tour. Beginning the points season on October 11th at The Fall Challenge Humble, our first time in recent memory at Tour 18, 15 rounds made up the local schedule where over 1400 competitive rounds were contested from players around the country.

Vying for year end awards, this year concluded with a customized and personalized staff bag from Club Glove to the Champions, and we continued the special 2016 of the Player of the Year Award, presented by Higginbotham.

Championship Flight:  Blake Wilson of League City, TX, jumped onto the Houston scene in a big way.  Playing in his first year on tour, Wilson, dominated his second event on the season with a - 4 / 68 at at the Panther Classic for his first win.  Wilson would then go on to three more wins on the year, including a third place finish at the Tour Championship at Blackhorse.  Blake, making his first National Championship start, looks to better his Southern Amateur finish at the facility.

Senior Championship Flight:  With wins at Sea Island, and Kiawah Island, along with runner a up spot at Pinehurst adding a top three at the Houston Tour Championship, no one would get close to David Ortego of Spring, TX.  Ortego a Championship Flight Champion at the 2016 Senior National Championship, made it seven wins on his sixteen attempts on tour.  David, the 2015 Senior National Champion at PGA West, looks forward to Innisbrook to make it two in a row.

Palmer Flight:  Tomball, TX, player Jame Sheppeard continued his Journey to Better during 2016.  Sheppeard, promoted in May of 2015, lost out on the points championship, but with five subsequent wins in the Palmer Flight, took home the Player of the Year award, presented by Higginbotham.   2016, may have been a little leaner on the win total, but non the less, he held the points lead virtually all year long.  With three wins on the season, to go with a T3 at the Tour Championship, James takes home the Flight Champion award for the first time in his career.  James a runner up at the 2014 National Championship, will head to Innisbrook with a Championship in his sights.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Robert Corbello, of VIdor, TX, followed up his 2014 and 2015 campaigns with three championships in three years.  Corbello, playing a limited local schedule, traveled to three Major Championships, won 2 events on tour, including the Tour Championship at Blackhorse to solidify the Championship.  Innisbrook will be Roberts, fifth run at the Senior National Championship and he looks to better his fifth place finish in 2011.

Hogan Flight:  Orange, TX, member Matt Purgahn, maximized his point total on the season with two runner up finishes at Major Championships, The Red River Shootout at Winstar and the Streamsong Amateur in Florida.  Add to that, a couple of local Championships and Purgahn took care of the hotly contested Hogan Flight by hundreds of points.  Matt won't make the trip to the National Championship, but the Houston Tour will be well represented in the flight.

Senior Hogan Flight:  With three wins before April 1st, David Anthony of Cypress, TX, didn't let up.  With six Majors under his belt on the season, including runner up finishes at the TPC Sawgrass Open, The Texas Open at Horseshoe Bay and the Streamsong Amateur, Anthony cleared the competition by over 500 points.  Heading to Innisbrook for the Senior National Championship, David will be stepping into big footprints with the last two Senior Hogan National Champions coming from the Houston Tour.

Sarazen Flight:  Unable to join us for the Tour Championship, Deer Park, TX, member Blake Barnes didn't need the extra boost of points.  Barnes with four wins on the season to go with six majors, finishing second at the Winter Championship at Innisbrook, last fall, led him to a 500+ point victory.  Blake will be making his third run at the National Championship next week.

Senior Sarazen Flight: Bruce LeGrand of Houston, TX, traveled everywhere.  Not a solid points contender until his win at the Streamsong Major Championship in Florida.  LeGrand competed in fourteen Major Championships on the season including a win another win at the Pinehurst Amateur, he finished just 60 points clear of Chris Neeley of Spring, TX.  Bruce, a member since 2010 will be making his fifth run at the Senior National Championship.

Jones Flight:   Unable to join us at the Tour Championship, Jeff Gregory of Montgomery, TX, won two events on the season, including two top five finishes at Major Championships to pick up his first Flight Championship Award in two seasons on tour.

Senior Jones Flight:   Marcy Glidden a three time winner on the season was close to the points in 2014, she made a big jump this season.  Winning the Southwestern Classic at GrayHawk Major Championship in Scottsdale, AZ, Glidden fought off promoted players, as well as local mainstays for her first Championship.  T6 in the 2013 Senior National Championship, Marcy will head to Innisbrook to better that finish.

Snead Flight:  Houston, TX, member Javier Quintero made it three in a row.  Winning the Flight Championship award his last three years, Quintero, won two events on the season, including a runner up at the Tour Championship at Blackhorse.  Javier will make his first National Championship at Innisbrook, in his eighth year on tour.

Senior Snead Flight:  Jim Lamberth of The Woodlands, TX, played in twelve events on the season, including five Major Championships.  With one win on the year, three podium finishes at Majors, including two runner up spots, Lamberth picked up his first Flight Championship award.

Hill Country Tour, PLAYER OF THE YEAR, presented by HIGGINBOTHAMThe special award was set up and presented by Higginbotham, a Business Insurance and Financial Services Company that services the state of Texas with home offices in Fort Worth.  The player from each tour in the state selected by the committee, with feedback from the membership that met a series of criteria, including having been promoted and continued The Journey to Better by excelling in the new flight, playing in the Tour Championship and attending the National / Senior National Championship in the new flight.

2016 HOUSTON TOUR Player of the Year:  TBD, with the sponsor mandate, we have a few players that are eligible.  National Championship / Senior National Championship will play a key role in the selection.

Upcoming Texas Events:

Off to the National Championship from September 13th - 16th and Senior National Championshipcontested September 19th - 22nd, many players from around the tour will compete for the top prize of the season.

Thunder and Lightning can't stop Houston Tour Championship

Scott R Chilcutt, Cypress, TX (August 21, 2016)  Blackhorse Golf Club was back on the schedule to finish out the points season on the Houston Tour.  This time around, the South Course was added to the rotation mixing up the views over the 36 holes.  The club, hammered by floods in the spring, had been attempting to get the washed out bunkers back in play, but additional rains leading up the event, simply didn't cooperate.

Lightning delays on both days tried the patience of the competitors, but in the end, the 36 hole event was contested in full.

Carl Eaton (Senior Snead Flight) was "Up for the Srixon Challenge".   Winning his respective flight playing a Srixon ball, Carl will get a dozen sent to him for the win. Rich Houchins picked up the Tournament Champion, presented by Carlisle's Engraving in a scorecard playoff over Matt Wolfe with a two day total of -5 - 139. The winner of the Feherty's Troops First Foundation 50/50 raffle, took home $520, bringing the year to date total from the Texas Tour local events to $12,940 contributed to the Foundation.

RESULTS:

Championship Flight:  Fort Worth, TX, player Jeremy Frenzel, with the help of four birdies on his opening round, took a two stroke advantage over a pair of players to the Sunday finale.  Making the turn, Frenzel added a stroke to the lead, but couldn't slow down a charging Thomas Cruickshank of Richmond, TX.  Playing his final nine holes in even par, Cruickshank would force a sudden death playoff, taking the momentum to pick up his first win, in his first year on tour.  Four time winner, in his first season on tour, League City, TX, member Blake Wilson, bettered his Saturday round by four strokes to round out the top three.

Senior Championship Flight:  Continuing a string of first time winners at the final event of the points season, David Jones of Silsbee, TX, put together a pair of +2 - 74's for the victory.  Jones, close in his first event out in February at the Golf Club of Houston, and then another runner up at The Prelude to the Texas Open - Barton Creek Lakeside, carded four birdies at the event for a six stroke lead.  Sugar Land, TX, runner up, Gordan Wagner carded his best finish on the season, with David Ortego of Spring, TX, taking fourteen strokes off on the final day, to round out the top three.

Palmer Flight:  Hill Country Tour visitor, Derrick Matthews of Killeen, TX,  playing in the final group, six strokes back after the Saturday round, did just enough with the help of a birdie on the par 5 - 8th to pick up his third win on the season.  Houston,TX, first round leader Harrison Hastings, carded a birdie before making the turn at the par 5 - 18th, but couldn't keep it rolling on his back nine, finishing one stroke back of the Championship.  James Sheppeard of Tomball, TX, and Orange, TX, member Rick Keszeg, a winner his last time out, shared the third place finish.

Senior Palmer Flight:  Vidor, TX, player Robert Corbello, started the weekend well going out in even par on Saturday.  Coming to the clubhouse Robert got into a little trouble, but was able to hold on to a one stroke advantage heading into the final round.  Sunday was the tale of two nines, starting on the 10th hole, Corbello made a mess of the front nine, got back into his rhythm on the back with another even par nine holes to win his second on the season and repeat at the Houston Tour Championship at Blackhorse.  Promoted to the Senior Palmer Flight, just after a T2 at the Texas Masters at Barton Creek, Mike Hafner of Katy, TX, proved he was not afraid of the new flight. Hafner, a Major Champion at the Kingsmill Classic in April, carded his sixth runner up spot on the season.  2015 Humble, TX, Senior Hogan National Champion, Tim Kozlowski, rounded out the top three.

Hogan Flight:  Firing a career low round, +1 - 73 on Saturday, Matt Wolfe of Groves, TX, set up a big cushion for the Sunday finale.  Wolfe, with a pair of birdies on his opening round, looked to have some travel lag when he got to the final 9 holes on Sunday, but used just about all of that cushion to pick up his second win on the season. Two strokes back, Houston, TX, player Rick Houchins, with an eagle on the par 5 - 18th on Saturday, made it interesting going his final twelve holes in even par to pick up the second place spot, with John Heintz of San Antonio, TX, in the show place finish.

Senior Hogan Flight:  Chris Phillips of Richmond, TX, started out his 36 holes with a birdie on the par 4 - 1st.  Mediocre for the next, thirteen holes, Phillips made a 10 on the par 5 - 15th, but wouldn't let that get him down.  Following up with three pars, Chris was still only three back after the Saturday round.  While somewhat shaky starting the day on Sunday, two birdies in three holes, making the turn would be just enough to jump into the lead and a certain flight promotion.  Phillips with two wins on the season and runner up finishes at Pinehurst and Barton Creek Majors, looks toward the National Championship as a Senior Palmer Flight member.  Brenham, TX, member Jerrod Hoyle, carded his best finish on the season in the runner up spot, with 2016 Flight Champion, David Anthony of Cypress, TX, rounding out the top three.

Sarazen Flight:  Just three events removed from a Journey to Better flight promotion, Montgomery, TX, member Joe Michetti, picked up another Sarazen Flight victory.  Michetti, with the help of a birdie on the par 4 - 16th on Saturday took a one stroke over night lead to the tee on Sunday and was able to lead the field wire to wire.  It was Joe's seventh win in his first season on tour.  Adam Bray of Katy, TX, a winner at The Woodlands, Tournament Course in July, six strokes back, but eleven strokes clear of third place Richardson, TX, player Sven Bock.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  McClendon - Chisholm, TX, traveler, David Day, slept well on an overnight lead, putting two +12 - 84's together for the start to finish victory.  For Day, in his second year on tour, it was his first championship.  Three strokes back a pair of players that lowered there first round scores, Chris Neeley of Spring, TX, and Pearland, TX, member Michael Bell, shared the runner up finish.

Jones Flight:  Playing together for both rounds, day one because of points, with the final round, shuffled by score, Wayne Waldrep of Spring, TX, and Houston, TX, member Artis Stewart looked to have a shootout on Sunday.  Waldrep, appeared to have things in hand with an eagle on his second hole of the day, but came back to the field finishing the front nine with a 50.  Ever so steady, Stewart, made the turn with a nine stroke advantage on Sunday and held onto the championship after Waldrep charged on the back nine.  For Stewart, it was his sixth win on tour and first of the season.  Tony Parrish, of Spring, TX, took fifteen strokes off his opening round on Sunday to round out the top three.

Snead Flight:  Conroe, TX, resident Carl Eaton, eight strokes back after the opening 18 holes, carded the round of his year on Sunday to jump ahead of the field for his third win of the season, after placing in the runner up spot seven of his last ten events.  Javier Quintero of Houston, TX, with a birdie on the par 5 - 15th on Saturday, came back to the field to finish seven strokes out of the lead, but plenty to pick up the 2016 Flight Champion honors. Corrigan, TX, player Mike Murphy, struggled through the cart path only situation on Sunday to finish the last points event of the season in the third pace spot.

Scott R Chilcutt, Friendswood, TX (August 6, 2016)  Just minutes west of the Johnson Space Center, Clear Lake and the Bay of GalvestonTimber Creek Golf Club hosted the repeat of the Friendswood Challenge on the Houston Tour Schedule.  While the 2015 edition was hampered with rain / lighting, this year saw nothing but clear and hot skies.

Senior Sarazen Flight:  Marty Hodges of Richmond, TX, put together his second sub 80 round on tour and first since 2011 to edge out second place finisher Orange, TX, player Glynn Aldredge by a stroke.  Hodges, with two birdies on his round coming at consecutive holes at the end of the day picked up his first win on the season and sixth on tour.  Aldredge, with a birdie on his final hole of the day, the par 5 - ninth shot a career low round for his best finish on the season.  Rick Halprin of Houston, TX, with a recent promotion for the Senior Jones Flight, finished in the show place position with two birdies on his round.
